Some people don't appreciate the handholding of Oblivion and Skyrim. In Morrowind, you actually had to read the journal since every quest entry gave you directions. "Turn left here, turn right there, go straight for a while, if you hit that thing, you've gone too far".

It also gave you more to do, believe it or not. In Oblivion, once you finish all the questlines, the game was effectively over.

The only thing I didn't like about Morrowind was how the weapon skills worked. You pretty much missed every hit until your weapon skill hit over 50. (But hey, that's why they pit you against rats and kwama foragers).

lets be clear here, I prefer daggerfall to morrowind, hand holding has little to do with it. The gameplay is just bad.

Well I got bored of Oblivion and Skyrim within a week or so of playing. Arena and Daggerfall are just plain unplayable nowadays. It's gotta be Morrowind, only game that keeps consistently bringing me back to it. All it needs is a lick of paint and a fix to the combat (it is shitty but nowhere near as bad people make out) and I'd never need another game again.

I've played Morrowind but couldn't beat it. I loved it but my favorite was Oblivion. Specifically, the Shivering Isles expansion. I loved the leveling system in Skyrim but it's my least favorite of the 3 I've played.

Either Skyrim or Oblivion. I can't decide. Skyrim feels in general like the better game but Oblivion was my first and therefore it has a special place in my heart.

The gameplay is... simple, I'll give you that. But hardly bad. We get worse gameplay in today's market.

Wait what? where in oblivion did that happen? Do you mean Kvatch? because if you wandered in there right away and closed the gate the main quest wasn't started until you talked to jaffre.

The gameplay is... simple, I'll give you that. But hardly bad. We get worse gameplay in today's market.
And here I thought we were comparing the TES games, I consider morrowinds gameplay to be the worst out of all of them

also, the argument, "could be worse" is not a vote in it's favor, it can still be bad without being the worst.

Funny... because I was able to do it.

Mostly because every quest that tells you go to somewhere to get something either
A. has the locations name stated in the dialog
B. has the locations name stated in the journal
C. has the locations name stated in both

After you get the quest, open up your map, make a mental note of where you need to go, then go there. You dont need directions to match names in a journal and on a map.

It isn't that hard, I got through a whole playthrough doing it.

I swear its like people dont even attempt things anymore.

Except all locations you are told to go to pop-up on your map as an unfasttravelable map marker.

Because much like New vegas, it is assumed people have the decency to mark it down on your map for you.

Ditto. I played Morrowind recently and it really doesn't hold up well on its own. Combat is repetitive, unresponsive and boring, the other mechanics suck equally hard for similar reasons(lollockpicking), the UI blows worse than Oblivion's, and the writing is...adequate.

Looking at it, I can see why it was popular when it came out. It was a big step when it came out. But now it's an unfuckable 80 year old granny that needs to be put in the retirement home.

Edit: I've actually thought about going really old school and playing Arena and Daggerfall, but I'm pretty sure I'd lose interest even faster than with Morrowind.

I dont recall a time were a minor quest didn't mark an area I haven't been to before, except of course the ones that weren't go to X place, but instead collect X number of objects.

Pretty much this.

Morrowind had a better story and WAAAY better atmosphere, but it was, in all truth, barely functional.

Skyrim has the Elder Scrolls gameplay refined to a mirror shine, but the story is meh, and the atmosphere, while good, doesn't hold a candle to Morrowind.
Pretty much. the horrible... everything, gameplay wise in Morrowind kept me from enjoying it, although the scope of the game really blew me away, as it was one of my first Xbox games, and my first open world RPG.

Skyrim, though... I've easily clocked in at least 200 hours, and don't plan on stopping.

Hard to say for me. I love all of them and am not good at picking a favourite. Oblivion was pretty awesome...Skyrim is currently eating all my spare time.

I found morrowind to be deeply frustrating sometimes. The stories were good, but near the end things kind of fell apart for me..I had put 100's of hours into the game before I ever really beat morrowind.

Skyrim, smithing takes too many perks and so does enchanting. Also, I would like to stack my flame/shock/frost shields. You could do it in morrowind...hell in morrowind you could attach those enchantments to your armor!!

Not so much of that really. People just don't want to grind just to fucking hit an enemy. For a game that emphasizes freedom, being restricted to one-two types of weapons isn't really that freeing. Plus, Vivec was just a clusterfuck where having to figure out where to find that one guy to continue the quest is just migraine inducing.

Now that you mention it, Vivec is a pretty lazy design for a city. I mean it's literally a copy-paste. Not to say there aren't some decently designed towns in Morrowind, but Vivec was awful.

I was actually surprised when I found out Oblivion was so hated. It's definitely inferior to past games but it wasn't HORRIBLE as far as I was concerned.

Ive only played the last two, and i actually have to say i enjoyed oblivion more and played it over a longer period of

the maps and stuff are pretty dull and all the dungeons literally look the same
the atmosphere, however...
it's gotta be one of the scariest freaking games I've played
whether you're walking around a dungeon or, god forbid, arrive Daggerfall City at night, there's always a feel that you're bing watched, or that enemies are there (due to the oh so subtle sounds they make), and it can be really unnerving (closest game I played in which I felt that was Minecraft and its caves)

I swear there was this time in which I was doing a quest in some castle where I had to clear it from the nymphs inhabiting it
and after I killed all the enemies besides the nymphs, I was walking around trying to find them, and all there was around me was darkness and their laughs, which was getting me really, really paranoid

so yeah, I was frightened of being in a dark place full of naked women =P

I... in the 5-6 years I've played The Elder Scrolls... Oblivion being the longest I played and when I think back to playing it, I still remember feelings of hapiness that go beyond words that can be used... and I just realized that Sean Bean played Martin... the voice that I remember most clearly and distinctly of that entire game.
