What great games have you played that have been free? I love TF2, Mari0 and a bunch of other games, but what are some great ones I may have overlooked

Do I take the bait? Fuck it yolo!

League is my favourite. Though over half of the people around here either hate the entire MOBA genre or prefer DOTA 2. Nothing wrong with that, but when a guy starts a thread on how to get into League and the entire first page of responses were practically all "don't even try, i'm a hopeless DOTA fanboy so have a Steam key because Valve is far too liberal with the infernal things" I draw the line pretty firmly.

DOTA 2 is my chillout game though. I can instalock anyone and nobody cares... Though annoyingly at this level the match depends entirely on who either 1. grasps the concept of pushing as a team first or 2. which team has the fed Riki. I've seen so stupid shit in League but ACTUAL successful 5v1s happen so frequently in DOTA.

I play a fuckload of support Alistar and top Singed now. You know that time in Solo Queue where your AD has just gotten himself caught in a stupid position and there's nothing you can do but watch on in horror? Alistar single-handedly bails him out no problem.

Singed is... Well. Singed. Nothing like walking past your enemy's first tower and farming there while he's trying to waveclear. He can't move you or he's chasing Singed! HA! It's odd but playing Singed requires a weird mindset. I thought the statement "Movement speed has a 1:1 ratio on Singed's trolling capacity" was a joke but it's really not... The weirdest fights ever top lane. Someone tries to all in you and you run around in circles at ludicrous speed, juking all his stuff until he dies.

Not to mention how hilariously ungankable he is. Pushing inhib towers all day.

Go to Newgrounds. Start playing games. Say goodbye to whole evenings.

There are plenty of MMOs that have gone free-to-play and don't even have a pay-to-win business model. I love TERA. Looooove TERA. The combat, the art design... the story, such as it is, isn't too terrible. The quests aren't original, entirely too much "10 bear asses" but at least every bear has an ass.
Rift is kinda a WoW clone, but still enjoyable.
Scarlet Blade... Okay, so it's got gigantic bouncing breasts and a couple butts. It is unashamed in its fanservice, to the point where it becomes... boring. I mean, it didn't take long before I just stopped noticing the bewbs, unless the game straight up threw them at me. I dunno, watch a few "let's play" videos of the beginning areas, see if you think it's worth your time. All it costs is the time to download it and play.

I think anyone and everyone should play Time Fcuk, it's a great little game that asks some pretty interesting questions.

I've been dumping a ton of time into an Android game called Puzzles and Dragons. It's like Pokemon meets Puzzle Quest.

I rather like Blacklight: Retribution (sci-fi FPS). It's similar to the spawn of Battlefield, CoD, and Halo having a bit to much to drink one night after each being dumped and thinking that maybe just this once they, you know, never really saw how much they understood each other, and wouldn't they like to go bare just this once...

Horrible mental imagery aside, the shooty bits are polished to at least a dull glimmer, the meta-game of building guns and loadouts is decently in-depth and stat-fiddly, and while you'll likely get demolished after level 10 when you step into the big boy servers, the F2P model isn't too atrocious.

It's still grabbing fiercely for your wallet, mind. You'll unlock trial items through normal play and leveling, but it's rare to get the really good stuff, and buying things permanently with the in-game currency (equivalent to EXP, more or less) takes a lot of games played to get up enough scratch for any one purchase. Set up, of course, to appeal to our lazier natures (you can buy anything at any time with real money equivalents, and in-game purchases for sweet gear is often level-gated). Also a bit punishing if you take a break, as all the trial gear you've accumulated will have likely poofed when you come back.

But, having dropped roughly 0 Dollars on it myself, I can say that it's pretty great fun.

OpenTTD if you're into simulation games.

Blacklight Retribution, while it is pretty aggressive with the F2P business model, you can still get everything by playing.

Also Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall on the XL engine is the SHIT.

I'll say LoL. And it really is free for me. I've never spent a dime on any skins or champions.

Besides, if you play nicely, Riot will occasionally give out RP as a reward so you can still go and get a skin for one of your favourite champions.

Ten posts and no mention of Cave Story. You sicken me, internet.

No, really; Cave Story is a damn fine free platformer. The instant comparison that comes to mind is that Cave Story is the equivalent of Contra but with a unique setting and not as ridiculously kill-happy. Seriously, just play it, its free.

As a few others have said, Blacklight: Retribution is quite entertaining. The free-to-play model is pretty fair and the inclusion of the Hyper Reality Visor (read: See-Through-Walls Visor) enhances the overall flow and experience of the game to outclass lots of other deathmatch-focused games.

Blacklight is pretty horrible compared to the previous suggestion of Tribes Ascend, the skill ceiling in the latter is much higher and unique in gameplay.

Zen Pinball and Real Racing 3 have been eating up chunks of my spare time.....when I have the Ipad handy. The ones I have are IOS......not sure if there are Andriod versions. Fun ways to kill time and free so long as you don't bother with purchasing anything via microtransactions.

Yeah, dude!

Puzzle & Dragons is also a recent favourite of mine. It's a RPG/Puzzle game akin to games such as Puzzle Quest and Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes. Like you said, what makes Puzzle & Dragons special is that it has a Pokemon element to it. Not only must you mix and match and queue up combos, but you must also construct a team of monsters powerful enough to get you to the end of the game.

Team building adds a whole new layer of strategy to the game, and serves as a strong motivator for you to keep playing it. You'll want to mix and match abilities to make the best team possible, and you will want to keep playing to find creatures with especially powerful stats and abilities.

Realm of the Mad God: Bullet hell RPG? Yes. Please.

Tera: Good Combat and visuals and you can ACTUALLY solo instances if you have any real measure of skill and can Dodge properly

Xeno Tactics 1.5: Fun Tower defense game even if Level 6 taunts you with "It CAN be beaten. But will you ever do it? NO."

League of Legends: If you can get past all the negativity surrounding it and find a friend or two to play it with, it's really fun, and you can waste entire days playing it so long as you don't mind dealing with trolls, but honestly, thats something you deal with in every game. I play mostly Bot games or friendly skirmishes with friends and it's great fun. I occasionally do PVP but it's late at night when most of the aforementioned trolls are in bed or at work. Honestly if you want to spend money to buy the new champ before Riot balances them, go for it. But i've only ever spent money i've been given as Christmas or Birthday presents and I have a roster of Champions i'm decent with and skins to go around. Max money spent? About 30 bucks. I've earned the rest
