This one is for all the Escapists out there who play online multiplayer matches regularly.
We've all had them. Matches that fly past in moments thanks to an intracate and well thought out plan, or just blind luck.
Then there are the matches that drag on for hours at a time, as wave after endless wave of foes break across expertly fortified positions.
Such moments are the stuff that online players DREAM of. That perfict match that propels us into a kind of multiplayer NIRVANA...
And then there are the other matches.
The one's that never go anywhere as unskilled players run about pointlessly. Where well laid plans are ruined by a late comer or lone wolf. And lest we forget, the moments when the hated Leroy Jenkins shows his ugly face.
But we're here to talk about the former of the two. About such perfictly crafted and exicuted manuvers that give us such joy that we couldn't possibly get up.
I want to know about such expert plans and Nirvana inducing matches.
Recently, I dusted off my copy of Battlefield 2142. I decided that if I was going to jump in it might as well be head first, so I joined a TITAN server (for those who don't know, TITAN mode is similar to Invasion in Halo Reach, 2 armies fighting over a series of missile silos with the objective being to destroy the enemy TITAN). Once I joined I was quickly assailed with chatter (I had joined up part way through and was hearing the Commander and Squad leaders co-ordinating the attack). What all happened isn't important; sufice it to say, I proved myself a capable soldier and as a result, I was made an integral part of the next round's strategy.
Before the round started, we had 5 minutes to plan our assault. I was in controle of Echo squad and was assigned to the role of "Fast Attack and Enemy Disruption" by our Commander. My squad's first job was to take a arial transport and assist Alpha and Bravo squads in a Blitz of silo 5 (the silo closest to the enemy). That done, my squad loaded up and made a bee-line for another silo while A and B defended their position.
We then alternated between distracting the enemy, attacking their support structures, and defending and re-taking various silos until the enemy TITAN's shields went down. At this point we instantly switched from an offinsive to a support role as every member of my squad to the driverseat of an air transport and started ferrying our team onto the wounded vessel (providing air support when needed). Then, with the TITAN core exposed we (all the squad leaders) planted spawn beacons on the ship and our entire force joined in a massive final push to destroy the core and claim victory.
TITAN matches tipicly last about hour, but can sometimes take up to three.
This particular match, was over in 21:48.
