I know this is gonna make me sound like a gitty Final Fantasy fanboy (and I am) but in FF7 when we find out about Cloud's past, how he never became a 1st class soldier and it was really Zack's story that he was telling. OMFG that was a sweet moment in my gaming history...

Staring at my avatar has reminded me of the C&C one.

Y'know, when Shepard fakes getting the GDI budget cut, so that Nod forces attack what should be undermanned bases, but instead encounter a strong defensive force that pushes them back?

The death of Carville in Red Alert 2. Never saw THAT one coming...Same with Kane shooting Seth in CaC1. And, more negatively, the realisation that Tiberium Sun had a main character... one called McNeil... the most generic hero ever to grace the franchise. I wanted James Earl Jones to speak to ME, dammit!

Snake's appearance in MGS2's first Vamp-Raiden fight surprised me, but for the worse. I really was hoping that, as the Colonel said, Solid Snake was leading the terrorists... that he and Otacon had kidnapped the President (Jack Bauer style) and the player (as Raiden) would be an unwitting pawn on the evil side. Imagine having had to fight Solid Snake as a boss? Awesome...

But the best twist of all, for me, was Soul Reaver 2. In the first game, Kain condemns Raziel to oblivion... in the sequel, the player realises that Kain is, in fact, your only ally. A great move, after the cliffhanger/anti-climatic finale, and executed with impeccable scriptwriting.

I'd have to say the ones from KOTOR, Jade Empire, Mass Effect (Saren not being the bad guy really) and Final Fantasy X. Both learning that Yuna has to die, and that Tidus doesn't really exist.

Damn...that's a good idea. And Snakes whole plan was to destroy Metal Gears anyway so having him know about Arsenal and all that would have ruled. Of course....after "beating" the snake boss you would have to have Snake beat Raiden up in the cutscene.

I'd have to say that Freespace 2 had an awesome plot line. The one where you spend 3 missions trying to kill the sathanas ( http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/SJ_Sathanas ). Then a few missions later you encounter another one...wtf... then it goes and kills the biggest ship on your side( http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/GTVA_Colossus ) in about 3 seconds. Then more juggernaughts start turning up. Then in the final mission, your supposed to be protecting a convoy, and the juggernaughts blow up the star in the centre of the system and your given 2 minutes to reach the jump node. arhghhhhhh! insanity!

WWII games as a whole, I just don't know how they keep the ending so fresh and unpredictable, I really don't see it coming... though lets be honest, it would be nice to see the Germans win just once, that would be quite a plot twist.
Surely they've made a WW2 game about Operation Market Garden. That was one of those scenarios where the Allies got their asses handed to them late in WW2.

Anyone remember Thief: The Dark Project? If so, you'll remember the scene I'm thinking of.

If not... well here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AAzkPkiImo
Agreed. My S.O. had explicitly told me what was going to happen before I ever played through that part, and even then I jumped a mile when it happened. The whole thing is up there in my top 5 most intense gaming moments.

MGS2 when you found out pliskin was snake, I honestly didn't know since it was years since i played MGS and didn't pay that much attention to notice it was the same person.
Actually, I think the best twist in that was when you entered Arsenal Gear and found out that the Colonel was just some bizarre AI program. Since I was only 10 at the time of playing it, it gave me some pretty freaky nightmares.

Also, the end of HL 2 was pretty twisty with Eli's death, though I wonder why the Advisor didn't go for Freeman first. Hmm...elderly scientist, or young freedom-fighter scientist who could butcher an army with just a crowbar and his glasses.
Gordon is a destrictive thorn in the combine's side, but eli is the real architect of the resistance. the philosopher-king who reached out to the vortiguants and made first contact. Notice how Black Mesa East was way bigger and Cooler than Kleiner's lab? thats because Eli is better. Why do you think mossman was over the moon about him?

In short, eli truly perceived the combine for what they were, and has been the real threat to them this whole time. Gordon killed the striders and pushed the launch button, and magnusson developed the rocket, but it was eli that brought them together to do it. To the combine, who think only in Hierarchies, Eli is Gordon's master. Kill Eli, and gordon is nullified as well. Without that one-legged old man, the resistance is run by a crotchety old man, a meek old man, an alcoholic security guard, an angry techie/action girl, and a emotionaly-oblivious mute with a crowbar.

Plus, Eli was older, knew more, and had more experiences than gordon. Brains are like wine, and he was a fine vintage.

Gothic had nice twist when you realize that all your efforts were in vain. Twice :D
Gothic II's story was a disappointment though...

I think that the elder scrolls series has one of the best twists of all time. It's when it becomes clear in Tes IV that you actually worsened the situation when you destroyed the heart of Lorkhan in Tes III.

The Colonel AI, and Rose AI (maybe) twist was freaking me out in that game. Kojima loves those meta-game mind-f**ks. Like the game going to game -over screen while you are playing...... I nearly reset it before it came back.

alsoo BioShock and System Shock 2. Also Planescape: torment

Yeag, about the only GOOD one I can think of is Bioshock. Every other one just seems like you can see it a mile away.
All right, if you're going to mention Bioshock, how about the original Shock twist? Where the Doctor who seemed to be on her period at the time who helps you out in System Shock 2 turned out to be SHODAN, your old nemesis from System Shock. I felt so god damned betrayed at that point. When Atlas turned out to be Fontaine, I was just like "Oh, damn, you sneaky devil you." where as SHODAN made me feel alone and helpless and fooled by my nemesis again in a dark and dreary corridor. Also Atlas was mega predictable if you played System Shock 2

Also, the end of HL 2 was pretty twisty with Eli's death, though I wonder why the Advisor didn't go for Freeman first. Hmm...elderly scientist, or young freedom-fighter scientist who could butcher an army with just a crowbar and his glasses.
Keep in mind the Advisor was an infant Advisor, so its more of a Combine, because if you remember they wanted you to not let them hatch. Also, it probably would have if Eli hadn't given him a whacking with the lead pipe in the hangar.

BioShock. You're initially spoon-fed that you're tabula rasa, when in fact, you're something much more.

KOTOR for the same reason as the above.

Bioshock again. I figured out Fontaine was Atlas but the Ryan reveal was awesome. Especially since this was the first time I got sick of a game's rails. Suddenly the rails made perfect sense and the whole thing was a a meta-critique of other FPS games and...wow.

Halo 1; the revelation of the Flood, and then the function of the Halo ring.

Bioshock; the Ryan boss level. Completely threw me for a loop. (I figured out "your" character's origin myself, from one of Suchong's diaries, and the Atlas reveal didn't do much for me.)

Mass Effect; the history of the Reapers, and the many other twists that unlocks in the storyline.

Played it recently. I was doing this quest for an asari diplomat, her sister had been kidnapped by pirates. She sent the ransom, but they didn't return her sister. So I head over there, kick their arses, only to find out from a computer that her sister was the leader of the pirates. When I returned, she explained how her sister was a risk to her career and needed to be removed. Pretty good stuff.

And then when the Rachni Queen was speaking to you...I didn't think it possible for them to be so advanced! A language based on colour and sound!

Totally agree there. The Rachni were well done and how you deal with the Queen is the most agonising choice in a game of very hit and miss moral quandaries. I'm still not sure I should have let her live.
