Having tried to find my Age of Mythology, (to no avail) I was wondering why we see a lot of "What is the Best [x-genre] Story" this, or that, but I've never seen one for RTS's.

Some RTS's seem to have a not too bad plot, not as personal as an FPS or RPG, sure, but can be good none the less.

So, escapist, what is the best RTS plot, and why?

I don't know. Age Of Mythology is okay, but I usually get bored and start spamming laser bears.
There are no RTSs that really grab me.

Starcraft's and Warcraft III's plot were brilliant and I loved them for it. Warcraft III is better because they actually did something with their loose plot threads while Starcraft has been taking nearly 13 years to put the pieces together.

A good RTS story? Hmmm...Do they even exist? I think that red alert 2 was quite good.

**->HOMEWORLD<-**

Other than that though the recently released Dawn of War 2: Chaos Rising had a pretty good singleplayer campaign. I wouldn't call the story great, but it was entertaining and did a good job of setting up some memorable fight and scenario which is pretty much the best you can expect from an rts storyline.

You know, Homeworld aside.

I also recall the old Myth series had a pretty entertaining plot, although not a particularly memorable one since I can't remember anything else about it except that it was well done.

I like Sins of a Solar Empire's approach, it gives you the back story for a war and just lets you take it from there in skirmish. No fussing with story, just gameplay.

I rather enjoyed Homeworld's story. I never played 2, but the first one was rather good.

All Blizzard RTSs have rich lore surrounding them both in-game and through novels and the like.

Company of Heroes, I know! I know! It's WW2 but all the characters are really well-rounded and they actually feel like they are real people (Ok I know the Captain and Sergeant of Able Company are influenced by Saving Private Ryan, but hey its a freakin' epic film) Abd it tells the story of WW2 really well. So yeah, thats my choice.

I really enjoyed both Warcrafts's and Rise of Legends campaign modes. If you like a fantasy angle on your RTS, both are pretty good.

I liked the historical settings in the Age of Empires campaigns as well though. Didn't like the Age of Mythology one as well.

yeah, blizzard made a perfect job with warcraft III. It allowed more impact when they pulled the chainsaw to slaughter the lore for World of Warcraft.
