The Best Sheriff I Know

James Best, the man who played Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane in the Dukes of Hazzard, died yesterday of pneumonia. I always enjoyed his work on the Dukes of Hazzard and The Killer Shrews. I now regret that I did not take any of the several chances I had to meet him. I can't think of a favorite Rosco moment, but him running away from dogs badly dressed up in carpets to look like giant shrews was great. Feel free to share any memories you have of his performances in this thread.

Ah, shit.

Well, most of my memories of Roscoe are an amalgamation of him being...well...himself. He's a small-town sheriff caught somewhere between being a gentleman and being the bad guy. One memory that sticks out is that in the reunion, he's taken over running the town, as Boss Hogg has passed on...and how does he honor the position? By conning some out-of-towners out of a shitload of money when they were trying to con HIM the whole time!

I loved watching the Dukes of Hazzard in the early 80s. Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane and Boss Hog was why I loved it then. When I got older I must admit I only watched for Daisy Duke. An end of an era of silly 80s action/comedies.
