First games that come to mind are: Bioshock, The Orange box, and some massive open-world RPG like Oblivion, but only because of all the back story.

You could also give the MGS games a try, but they're like an acquired taste.

Mass Effect, easily. Great story, and the game is huge, so you'll be spending a metric arse-ton of time with it.

Tried the MGS series. Wasn't a big fan. Bioshock was ok, can't afford the orange box atm haha.

If you don't mind going retro, Final fantasy 7 is always a good bet.
Am playing this atm. Was really into it, then, suddenly, wasn't anymore...

I'm gonna second Mass Effect and Bioshock, and pretty much every other game made by Bioware.

Ahh... i thought you meant overall story. I would have said 'halo' as personal favorite.

But for that, i might say mass effect, great story and it helps you for when number 2 comes out.

As long as you've made it outside Midgar, otherwise you haven't really started the game yet :p

Half-Life 2 and it's Episodes, Portal, Bioshock, and if you manage to understand it, I hear the MGS4 story is good.

But here's the one nobody else has though to mention; Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason. Cryostasis is a PC game, made by some Ukrainian developer (Aspyr, I believe). It's a corridor shooter with rather average graphics, yet runs such and inefficient engine that to run the game at highest settings and enable PhysX (Though in all fairness the water physics are very impressive), you'll need some impressive specs. But despite it's inefficiency and unvarying environments, the story is absolutely fantastic. The game should be played if only for that. Also, the Mental Echo gameplay mechanic is very interesting and unique. Just be sure you have a very good system, and buy it on Steam, because it'll include the patches that make the game actually playable.

Well thanks for your help everyone! I've talked to my mate and I should be running Mass Effect by Wednesday! Feel free to continue discussions if you want! Personally I always felt the original Golden Sun had a cool, if somewhat generic story line and Prince of Persia: SoT
