Fallout 3
If you like good story, this is absolutely a no-go. If, however, you like an incredibly detailed world with lots of things to explore, by all means, this is great. The actual story line is pretty bad, but it's the fact that there is so much going on to find that the other stories make it work playing. The shotgun lesbian zombie wedding, for example.

Also, Lost Odyssey is looking to be a great game. I'm only on Disk 1, but I can't wait to continue.

Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn plus Throne of Bhaal. I preferred it to Baldur's Gate 1 anyway.

and maybe Fallout 3
I have to say; I love Fallout 3. It is an awesome game in so many ways.
But the main storyline is crap.
Wadsworth's jokes were better then giving a toss about clean water.

-Mass Effect
-Bioshock
-Max Payne 1 & 2
-Legacy of Kain series
-Metal Gear Solid series

All great stories....

If you want STORYLINE..... I suggest Metal Gear.... it's nothing BUT story.... if you can comprehend it. Though The Legacy of Kain series has some great twists and turns.

... Fallout 3 = Crap.... fun game, terrible story (given I have never played Fallout 1 or 2, regardless, it was still crap).

For the current console generation Mass Effect, BioShock and Metal Gear Solid should be your pick. And why hasn't anyone mentioned the 'Thief' games?

It's the Final Fantasy XII SquareEnix couldn't pull off. You own it to yourself to finish the game, if only for the absolutely epic, bittersweet ending.

The combination of Shadow Hearts and Shadow Hearts Covenant.

Covenant is a direct sequal to the first Shadow Hearts, they're perfectly enjoyable on their own, but to get everything out of the story, it is definitly a must do have played them both.

The story has an original setting (respectively right before and during the first World War) with subtle 'alternate history'-elements. It can be both funny (Joachim and the homoseksual Migamel brothers), cruel (the whole 'Alice'-thing) and simply badass (Yuri's fusion moments), with superb character development. Truly a magnificent stroyline!

Also, the final bosses in both games are quite a bit different from normal RPGs... Especially in Covenant, his ideals were actually... good. Not to mention he was always supporting you and had to go through the suffering of losing the same woman twice. Really leaves you with an uneasy feeling... I love it when a game can succeed in doing that.

It's a shame the last and third part (From The New World) was such a disappointment...

If you're looking for a real philosophy-heavy story, then I would defenitly recommend Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call. Epic story with six diferent outcomes and trust me, none of them are black/white. Although the True Demon ending kind of gave me a feeling of "what have I done..."

So yeah, I prefer the non-'happy happy joy joy' stuff.

Duke Nukem 3d, I felt myself emotionally moved in that wonderful cutscene where he...took out a shotgun, blew off a bosses head, exclaimed that he was going to get earths women back and also how much he hated those alien sobs *Sarcasm*. But seriously...um...bioshock had great characters and those tapes were a great way to convey alot of the story. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say fable 2. I don't care what everyone says but I love that game (Ironically I borrowed it from a friend who enjoys the fable series having once borrowed fable 1 from him beforehand, I got close but I didn't finish it before He asked for it back.)

I would say the metal gear solid series, but you would have to like Kojima's way of story telling. Maybe Final Fantasy VII if you like going retro.

If you like RTS games, I'd reccomend the Homeworld series, though I've only played Homeworld2 myself.

For a game which doesn't have playable characters or conversations, and all you control are a fleet of ships, it has one of the most epic storylines I've ever played through.

I have to agree with Dead Space and C&C...... Dead Space is not the most extravagant story.. but it's a great game.... and I'm simply a fanboy of the C&C series (NOT including: Red Alert 2/3, or Generals)

I have yet to play Deus Ex or System Shock 2... but I plan to.....

I'd say Final Fantasy VIII has a good story.
Seconded, oh how seconded. I'd even go out on a limb and say it beats Final Fantasy VII's story. Yes, you heard me. I also think VIII has better characters.

My contribution to this thread would probably be any of the older Bioware games like Baldur's Gate, Knights of the old republic 1 and 2, maybe planescape torment (I just got it, looks promising).

I seem to be having the same problem. Just can't seem to get into a game now days. I played Bioshock a bit but I dunno. And others I've tried but just can't seem to get into. Will try Lost Odyssey, though.
