Jade Empire.

...

Oh, wait. Out of those two? If you were around and playing in the Baldur's Gate era, go for Dragon Age. Otherwise, go for Mass Effect.

Both games are good. Both games have their negative points.

I guess I would say Dragon Age simply because you can get it cheaper right now and then get Mass Effect 2 in the future as both are worth playing.

Dragon Age is highly overated..

Mass Effect 2 on the other hand is much better than I thought and warrants the praise and high ratings it gets.

Dragon Age is a traditional RPG through and through. Swords, magic, dragons, etc. It has a lot to offer, but it may take a little while to get hooked. Took me a few hours anyway.

Mass Effect 2 is more of an action RPG, which is a lot more popular. You really don't need to play the first Mass Effect to enjoy ME2, it's just a nice bonus. And it's still being supported (there will be DLC in the future).

If it makes any difference, ME2 is significantly shorter than DA. For instance DA:O should give you 40-60 hours if you complete all of the side quests, and ME2 maybe you can get 30 hours out of.

It depends on what you're looking for, if you want a great fantasy game with alot of content and options for making a unique character go Dragon Age. Both games are well written, fun and relatively easy to get into but Dragon Age simply has more content (not counting DLC)

Depend on do you like the traditional RPG element (character progession)?
If yes Dragon ago.

Mass Effect 2 isn't a traditional RPG anymore.

Yes, I used the term "traditional" RPG just to avoid those fan boy jump to defend that ME2 is still a RPG...

Also if you hate bug go with Mass Effect 2, Dragon ago is fulled of them.

EDIT: If you go with Dragon Ago, get the PC version. There are mods that can fix many bugs which bioware didn't patch (quite a lot). Also PC version allow isomatic view which is a lot better than 1st Person view for this game.

Personally, I liked Mass Effect 2 better, but they're both great games. However, since you haven't played Mass Effect yet, I'd recommend getting Origins. You can play Mass Effect 2 without having played the first one, but it'll spoil it. Also, Origins is a more traditional RPG. So my recommendation is get Origins first, then Mass Effect 1 & 2 later.

I plan on going to gamestop later to get either Dragon Age origins or Mass Effect 2 (both for ps3) and wanted to know which is better? iv heard alot of complaints about ME2 being heavily streamlined/dumbed-down but is that really an issue?
*Note:I have never played a dragon age or Mass effect game before, but i do know the basic mechanics.
If you like slower, tactics-based RPGs then go Dragon Age. If you've played Baldur's Gate I or II then it plays like those.

If you want an action-rpg that relies less on tactics, more on reaction time then get ME:2

Both are great games but i have to say Mass Effect 2. My reason being that you plan to play on ps3... to put it a good way i did truly enjoy the depth of Dragon Age and compared to Mass Effect, i say Dragon Age is the better rpg (not better game, i can't decide over all), but a true rpg like Dragon Age is made for computer not console, the limitations of console took a lot away form the experience, Mass Effect was made for console so there is nothing holding it back on the ps3.

Too bad Baldurs Gate doesnt come on PS3. On PC DA:O was far more enjoyable but i've heard very little positive about it on console (i run out of keys for the abilities on a keyboard and am terrified how frustrating it could be with a controller).

Mass Effect 2 has an absolutely stupid plot but its irrelevent considering how absolutley fantastic the side characters are, they manage to actually cover up the bad plot. Though its a boring shooter combat with near to zero customization but you do actually get to make some choices. Mass Effect 2 really isnt much of an RPG but still a good game to be honest.

I would rather be punched in the stomach than play Dragon Age on a console.
Get ME2.

I would just like to point out, no it doesnt play like BG at all. The only similiarity is being able to pause.

On the PS3? Neither, seriously.

DA only plays properly on the PC.

ME2 without playing ME1 first is a poor choice.
If you're going to try the storyfag experience, atleast start at the beginning. When you miss out on the story, what's left is a half decent Third person shooter.

Play something else instead. There has to be something worthwhile on the PS3.

On PC, this would be a tough call. Dragon Age is the better RPG, but Mass Effect 2 is the better game.

But ah, you're playing on console. Mass Effect 2 all the way. DA's combat on console is a hideous clusterfuck.

Expect an interactive Gears of Effect in ME2. If you dislike spending 30 hours of sticky walls, looking for clips and pointless plot - steer clear of it.

While we're kind of on the topic of bioware, does anyone else feel that the addition of fuel in ME2 was a 100% bad idea? It's like "Go, explore the galaxy! BUT NOT TOO MUCH"

It was supposed to be an interactive map. And now Shepard is standing on that pedestal and playing a silly game. They must've been drunk when doing some decisions there...

I loved both games, but I played 'em both on the PC.

ME2 is great (visuals and atmosphere, the characters, too. The story/plot could've been better, IMHO), and there aren't really any mods (so I guess you won't miss out much from the PC version). So if you're going to play one on the PS3, then get this one. (I'd still recommend playing ME1, tho'. I saw the YT vid for the comic thingy for the PS3 that covers the events for ME1 and, IMHO, it wasn't really good)

Dragon Age: Origins has awesome characters/dialogue (Morrigan FTW!), but I wouldn't recommend playing it on anything but a PC because of the mods and some community fixes.

I didn't mind that one.

The heat clip thing, on the other hand, was rather annoying. I still prefer the ME1 heat dissipation mechanic over ME2's limited heat clip mechanic. A hybrid system would've probably been better: once you're out of heat clips, it switches to the ME1 heat dissipation thingy until you can get more heat clips.

Actually, it plays a shitload like those game.
I have to disagree. Active pause is the only similarity.
In DA:O there's a lot potion/spell/ability spamming, mana system (rather bad BTW), no death, less flexibility - you can't solo the game unless you play as a mage.
