Another great episode brah. Though not better than "Numbers" (but what could beat that?)

I was not old enough to see the Joe Camel ads first hand but my dad did use to work for them(he worked in their IT department and he even remembers recieving packages of cigarettes with his pay cheque) and there for some reason advertisements of Joe Camel in our playroom. He always told my brother and I to never smoke cigarettes.
I think that blaming mascots for fast food companies a little bit annoying. I mean I know plenty of people (including myself) who grew up having mcdonalds probably more than they should as children but they are not obese and neither am I. four or five of them I wonder how the hell they appear underweight when they always eat poorly. The responsibility is within the parents and the sooner they can get that through dumb ass parent's thick heads the better we will all be.

Good episode, not great, but good. I agree totally, I just prefer your nerdier topics. Well well, there's always next week.

Isn't the whole blame for the restaurants like the blame for video game developers on violence? That's kinda how I see it. I think parents gotta step in and explain stuff to their kids rather than toss the blame elsewhere. BUT that's just me talkin.

i noticed a pattern in this show. Every other week Bob talks about something silly or funny while a week after he talks about gritty or depressing subjects. Great episode once again!!!!

I think there might be a bit of a problem in your central argument that tobacco is bad for you whereas hamburgers dont cause obesity...unless consumed by excessive amounts. In the scientific world of toxicology everything is bad for you if consumed in excessive amounts. Smoking less than once in a week does not cause statistifically significant risk to life expectancy. Teaching kids to love McDonalds encourages bad habits that stick especially to the fat and the poor. Read that sentence again.

I call your episode to be a bit too filled with nostalgia.

"blaming master chief for lack of civility" this line is killing me, given that he himself made the agument that halo is to blame a billion times

Bob makes a lot of good points here. I for one am constantly preaching the value of personal responsibility, and its good to hear someone finally come out and say that parents, not corporate mascots, are responsible for helping kids make the right choice when it comes to food and lifestyle choices.

The modern day push toward banning or legislating good decisions is kind of worrying, because as Bob says, one day the things that matter to us will be put on trial if people just keep making the same basic, non-object-oriented mistakes. Hell, the "video games cause sloth" argument could be attached to almost any sedentary activity, i.e. books, card games...

Nice video, Bob.

Didn't he say "Blame Master Chief for lack of civility in online play"? But then again, about that always remember kids "ONLINE INTERACTIONS ARE NOT RATED BY THE ESRB"!

Bob is hard to pin down. He started off on libertarian stance, then switched to socialist, and ended on a conservative sounding slippery slope argument.

Watch Video
I think it should be mentioned that George Carlin did a notable skit on American obesity during his Life Is Worth Losing HBO special. His criticism is by and far more blunt than yours, but offers a unique point of view of the whole of American society in this issue, while at the same time giving validity to your perspective.

Regardless, very nice episode. Agreed with most, if not all, of what you've put forth. And yes, I am old enough to know about Mr. Joe Camel.

There is a brocard in germanic roman civil law that is: "To live is an activity of risk." Some gov's treat their citizens as sheep being conducted by an evil wolf. No one informs you properly. I think MovieBob got a great point.

Loved your definition of natural selection!
I didn't know about this, it certainly is stupid. Enforce a parenting license and it's all fixed.

I pretty much agree with the central theme of the video, but then he goes and rambles about how scientists should replace bad parents, which is pretty much the opposite of personal responsibility, and then uses a picture of three of the people that would most agree with the central theme of the video to demonize those who would rather have their parenting rights respected, which I assume would include him if the situation presented itself. (...and it's always the same people...)

I somehow don't believe he thought this through.

When using the Darwin argument of natural selection to point out the importance of personal responsibility, you must remember that you're also basically saying that someone that has the "insight" to remove himself from the gene pool can't be blamed for doing the same to his offspring.

This is why demonizing those who do not think the way you do with broad brush strokes is a bad thing.
