Yes Captain Marvel is awesome. The SHAZAM guy I mean. Strong guys that can fly are a dime a dozen in the comic world. The fact that Marvel derives his powers from the virtues of past heroes makes him unambiguous. It's true that some of these virtues are physical characterics and seem shallow. It's important to remember Greeks and Romans considered a strong body to be just as important a virtue as a strong mind.
Unlike Super Man who is unfortunate enough to be good because he wants to be and because he had good parents. Meaning that old soops gets his motives endlessly questioned by jaded geeks who can't conceive of someone being that good.

I actually didn't know about or was interested in Mar-vell until i read about a young avenger who is actually his secret child that he had with a Skrull princess but the kid never found out until the evil Super Skrull came looking for him. But really, Super Skrull was just trying to protect him from the other skrulls and... ya. Has there ever been a time other then the Golden age when comics were simple?

Good episode Bob. Honestly, I think this show really should just be called "Comics are Weird". They're the best episodes by far. Even though I have an extensive knowledge of comics I don't know half the obscure shit here.
Always really liked Captain Marvel in modern day comics, not in the sense that I'd actually read any of that poorly written shit, but in the sense that he's kind of become an even more of a Boy Scout than Superman. Superman is a grown adult, he's nieve (or possibly just has faith in humanity depending on your outlook) but as comics have become more "mature" so has he. Billy by his very nature remains innocent; he's a kid. In his way he's kind of like the modern day silver age Superman.

I know Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes had Captain Marvel (the Marvel one, not the DC one) on one episode, but I think he was more heavily influenced by the Ultimate universe Captain Marvel, which is a whole new can of worms
Manga series can be weird, but have nowhere near the continuity problems since most series are stand alone. And Continuity problems are the pride of American Comics. Now Japan, they've got other things going for them, ever heard of Narutaru/Shadow Star? Nuff said.brazuca said:

And you know, I actually only heard of Captain Marvel a few months ago when I picked up my roommate's copy of MKvsDCU. But then I found a short animated origin story involving superman and Black Adam. It. Was. Awesome.

I am beginning to think Bob is reading my blog, I wrote a 1,500 word bit on the SHAZAM side of things 12 days ago. Some fun things he left out: Mister Mind, a caterpillar super villain wearing a tiny radio that projects his voice, the bug that burrows into your ear, controls your actions and eventually matures into a giant monster that eats time streams; Black Adam, a middle eastern super hero that has a SHAZAM set of powers that coordinate to a middle eastern pantheon and is a morally ambiguous rival to Captain Marvel; and Tawky Tawny, a were-Tiger that assists Captain Marvel by dressing like Jimmy Olsen. Comics are weird.
Also I want to recommend "Superman/SHAZAM: The return of Black Adam" the Bruce Timm animated movie that is currently on Netflix instant que.

If anyone's uninformed as to the comic book atrocities comitted against female characters check out Gail Simone's site 'Women in Refrigerators' in which the Green Lantern's girlfriend was.... stuffed into a refrigerator Just to give him a reason to go after some guy called 'Major Force' (?) I would like to see the big picture creating a spin-off in 'Bob's Speech Bubble', just sticking with the comic based weirdness. Not that the other episodes aren't excillent, but these comic book background episodes are really interesting and have made comic books a reasonable talking point with my mates
