The big problem with download stores

So it has happened. One of the digital download stores I was using (Alienware) is closing down, and any possibility of re-downloading my purchases will be gone forever a month from now.

It has always been at the back of my head. Every time I made a digital purchase, I would think "I'm not really buying anything physical, what if the store goes out of business?" But every time, I thought that it wouldn't be happening in the near future, that by the time anything closes down, I'll probably have a system incapable of running those old games anyway.

Now, one obvious solution is to download copies of all my purchases and keep them. But with the store closing down, license activation also goes down. Which means I have to download my games, install them, and never remove them. System failure or switching to a new PC will deprive me of my purchases. And the e-mail I received from them contains nary a hint that they would be removing DRM so that, you know, people can actually install and play their purchases.

Luckily, I only had two games from them, and bought on a sale. But still. I guess I'm bitter because now it feels like I only rented the games from them, rented at full retail price, the money I could have used to buy a disc version.

I should have seen that coming, but I still feel somewhat cheated.

Discussion value? Yes, there is. The DRM issue. Because as much as I understand that the servers go offline, I really don't see why they won't remove the license activation feature. Keeping a physical copy of your games is easy. But I tend to get irked when it turns out the only way I can actually play my game is by cracking it. Thoughts on that?

Hooray for DRM!

Yeah I'm going to stick with trying to get my games DRM free when possible... GOG.com, you are beautiful, never change.

Sucks that happened to you, I hope they weren't amazing games you downloaded and that you can live without them if your computer ever suffers a fatal crash.

Also, I still prefer discs over everything, I have a lot of PC games on CD and I don't really want that to change.

I'll drink to that

It was Medieval 2: Total War and expansion. High replay value, and me being a medieval history nerd... It's gonna be tough. But at least it's not one of my absolute favourites - I have all of those on CD/DVD. Some in multiple copies.[/quote]

I went through a period when almost all the games I bought were digital, but now I'm back to my old "wanna have a physical copy" self. It's just more satisfying to see all those discs I've amassed over the years on my shelf...

Damn I just managed to get my hands on a free promotional copy of Medieval 2: Total War gold Edition the other day...

That's some damage right there, thankfully Medieval 2 is quite cheap now, so you could probably get it again for around £5 :3

I love all my boxes and discs just lined up on a shelf, it just seems so... fulfilling.

This isn't just a problem with stores, most developer also uses phone home systems. When their serves goes down all there game become useless, unless you brought a physical then you will have a expensive paperweight.

You could also quite easily copy the saves files over to a (potential) new purchase, although it sucks about the DRM thing.

I am confused, and unsure about the alienware service OP is describing, but if you buy something digitally, do you not get a digital copy to store on your hard drive? The only thing I really buy digitally is Steam games and music from Itunes

You do get a copy, but every time you install, you have to activate it online when running for the first time. My experiences are that it even applies to reinstalls on the exact same system. If the activation servers are out, you can't play the game. And the e-mail from the store specifically said that license activation will be unavailable.

I know its a huge grey area, and sometimes not what they want on the forum. However, you legally own the games. You may crack them to your hearts content. Have fun.
