The bum of Mass Effect and Sexual Repression

So I just dropped a post about the sex scene in Mass Effect, and told a story about trying to sell Mass Effect to a couple of parents for their 12 year old. The gist was that they saw ?Partial Nudity? on the back, and went w/ Bioshock instead.

I know I?m not the first person to notice or comment on how violence is so much more acceptable in our society and anything sexually related, but it still kind of boggles my mind. While both Bioshock and Mass Effect are great games, I loved the story in Mass Effect more, and was recommending it based on that really. It reminds me of going to Europe this past summer. For part of our trip, we spent a week in Greece, and I couldn?t help but notice how most women chose to sunbathe, sans top. And you don?t have to go all the way to the Med to find this, as soon as you get away from the US controlled/influenced islands in the Caribbean, the standard relaxes as well. I saw similar things on Curaçao in the Netherlands Antilles (as my wife was quick to point out, saying such things as ?Oooo, she has pretty boobs? as often as she could to see me squirm).

My point is this, in America, 1 in 3 women will experience some kind of sexual assault in their lives. In Europe, it ran roughly 20% of women, so 1 in 5. I know I?m not the only person to postulate a possible connection between societal sexual repression and increased incidence of sexual assault, but as gamers, can?t we trend toward the less prudish? The scene in Mass Effect was nothing, you see more risqué things on CSI every week night in prime time. I don?t mean to say that we should have jubblies just hanging out everywhere, I certainly have seen enough of Lara Crofts digital udders to last the rest of my days, but supporting games with women as real people instead of merely sexual objects isn?t that hard, is it? The reason the scene in Mass Effect worked so well, at least from where I was, was that I had built up a relationship with this other character. We flirted, and while it wasn?t Oscar worthy material or anything, it was rather romantic, and it worked with the story. In other words, Ashley (in my case) became a person my character in game was interested in.

I don?t know, am I way off? Can we as gamers rise above our base instinct of being draw to boobs over brains?

Welcome to 2009, where murdering little girls is more acceptable than seeing a bottom.

Mmm...hot alien tushie...
...wait, what are we talking about again? Oh, right...

It comes down to the fact that we have an overabundance of soccer moms and religious people that are really loud and think that sex will ultimately bring about the destruction of the very fabric of society that they approve of.

That and they're so loud that the people who can actually MAKE the decisions side with them just to make them shut up.

It's also important to remember that you only get the "zomg teh sex" scene if you actively exhaust all romantic options with a character, something that a 12-year old is probably unlikely to do, seeing as you can run around and shoot things.

My parents are much the same way...they can watch really violent movies, but the instant there's anything resembling a sex scene, they ask "how far does this go?" and demand that it be skipped.

It's just the same situation as Fox ran headfirst into a brick wall over last year.

Personally, I think people who have had sex demand too much information for those too young to have or even know. Just because people want one less complication in their child's life doesn't make them Nazis. They'll learn about sex the way we all do: the playground.

I think if the parents had actually played both games they'd opted for ME instead, the "nudity" was so lame you propably see worse in day time soaps, and other than that it's a lot less violent and scary than Bioshock.

Personally I would rather let my kids see some nudity than gore, we all have human bodies afterall so I don't see what the big tabu is with it, i guess the problem is that lot of people see any nudity or sex in entertainment as porn.

This.

Also, one of the major differentiating factors between America and Europe is the sheer size of this country, and with the way it's divided up and how it operates, it makes it easier for a group to become isolated from other ideas and that group's ideas are able to flourish more before entering the mainstream, which explains a lot of movements here, both liberal and conservative. The main population centers (and liberal centers, considering cities tend to attract liberal points of view) are Boston, New York, Philadelphia, DC, Denver, Chicago, Seattle, Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Los Angeles (I might be missing a few, that's okay, you'll see my point). This means that there are huge gaps where new liberal ideas won't drift until they hit the mainstream, allowing conservative ideas to remain, in a process similar to water becoming stagnant.

The European Union, on the other hand, has a lot of things going for it that contribute to a more liberal society. First off, the centers of population and culture, if there aren't more of them than the states, are more evenly spread out, with a lot less ground to cover between them anyway. So liberal ideas can reach more people sooner and contribute to a more liberal culture.

Any nation or area that has the idea sex is bad and violence is less hurtfull to children has issue's imo.

Love is a wonderfull thing and I rather have my to-be-children see some really covered sex scene when they pick all noble and romantic options in a game then to let them play a game where you shoot somebody cause you dont like his face.

I'd rather my 12 year old play whatever he wants, as long as I know what he's playing and how he interacts with the outside world when he's not playing them. If he's showing violent tendencies, and reaaaallly likes playing Quake, I can be pretty sure that his obsession with violent video games is a symptom of a real problem, and not a cause.

Point is, we live in a media centric society. If my kids want to play it or watch it enough, they'll find a way. And I don't see why not. I shouldn't need to shield my kids from the outside world. I should be around while they embrace it, and help them tell fact from fiction so they can function better. If my kid starts stabbing people, it's not BioShock's fault. I just didn't get him the psychological attention he needed and I'm just a shitty parent.

Pretty much the entirety of middle-class America went into a complete spasm about a boob being shown at the Superbowl for less than a second.

You honestly want to argue sense with these people?

- That's nice, honey.
- Oh mommy that lady looks nice in that swimming suit!
- EYES AT THE WALL!! EYES AT THE WALL, YOU SON OF A BASTARD! *turns off Xbox and spanks the boy"

Or they saw 'partial nudity' on the Mass Effect box, and 'voilence' on the other. Given 'voilence' appears in virtually everything these days, and that level of voilence wasn't stated, "voilence" was possibly more acceptable to them than "sex and voilence". Also, voilence isn't something that can be hidden until they are old enough to understand, like sex.

Agreed, and I love your avatar. Funny guys.

IMO, the West is very immature about nudity.. but not about mini skirts. Hrm.

Sex is a natural, necessary part of our species' existence; killing is not. Can we get our priorities straight?

Perhaps these people are paranoid that a society that is more sexually promiscuos will hasten the arrival of the anti-christ?

I don't see what all the fuss about the sex scene in Mass Effect is anyway, it's tastefully done in my opinion. Nothing a 12 year old would get disturbed by.

I live in Ireland, a country so sexualy repressed it's a wonder(and a shame) it hasn't exploded, nudity and anything even remotely related to sex will always be seen as being far worse than violence, it's a sorry state to be in but hopefully the world will out-grow it.
