I have no association with XCOM, I don't like strategy games. I did however love the mass effect series. All the reviews of this game have compared it to the others in its series and rated it poorly for it because the reviewers are passionate about the RTS XCOM games and thats fine but its left me wondering if I would like this game. Is it a good Mass Effect clone? I LOVE Mass Effect and so if its a good clone of that then I really don't care to much if its a "betrayal" of XCOM fans

From what I hear it's a bit of a Mass Effect clone but a bad one because;
A- The squadmates are shit from a gameplay and story perspective
B-The gunplay is straight up bad rather than serviceable
C-The powers and abilities are dull.

Of course, I haven't played it, so take this with a pinch of salt.

Sadly the problem is that it isn't a good clone, the game suffers from Development hell syndrome. If they had more time to figure out how to make the strategies, the AI, Combat, Story work then the game could be a decent game, the old school x-com fans will still have issues but less of them would and everyone else would have agreed it's a decent game. But not everything's well, The combat and story are just dull and the game's pretty buggy and just doesn't run well either, throw in the frustration of the AI doing stupid stuff and sadly the game fails if simply judged as a mass effect clone.

Anytime a dev uses an old name like Xcom theyre hoping to rely on the good faith of that title to bolster sales. However history has proven that redesigning a game hurts sales in the long term. Games like DMC were relying on those sales but these redesigns turned off old fans of the franchise and less of them bought it, driving sales of the games far lower then were expected. If devs didnt care about those past players then frankly they wouldnt have been relying on an old and popular title's name to bolster sales.

That aside, I wonder if you would be singing the same tune if a game you liked got a radical change into something it wasnt.

Huh? I didn't say that fans of XCOM had to like it or couldn't hate it because it changed the format. I was saying that I have nothing invested in the series, I'm not a fan of RTS so I am looking at the game PURLY as a Mass Effect clone and I was asking if it stands up when looked at in that light only

If Bethesda turned Elder Scrolls into a COD clone no I wouldn't like it and would be quite annoyed but I wouldn't be offended if a fan of COD who didn't play RPGs and so had no interest in the Elder Scrolls previously wanted to see if it was worth playing as a COD clone
