Seeing the Space Marine trailers got me thinking about how awesome it would feel to be in a military squad called the "Space Marines". The term is overused and cliched now, but it's still an incredibly awesome and badass role when you think about it.

So what sci-fi unit name in your mind conjures up the epitome of badass? A squad that when you hear their job you immediately know they are the coolest, hardest, most awesome soldiers on the battlefield?

Northern Assault Squad Alfa

Just thought it sounded appropriate. Also, the achronym works.

EDIT: In case anyone's wondering why the word "Space" has been left out it's because i think it's redundant to put that in the name of a squad that you're sending into space.

If you were to slap it onto a space shuttle it'd be like saying "Haw haw, we're going into space and you lot has gotta stay down here on Earth. Space here we come! Spaaaaace"

The Salarian STG is probably a better comparison to the SAS. I'm not sure what the Spectres could be paralleled with. Probably closer to the Space FBI or Interpol only about 1 billion times more badass.

If I was going to invent a sci-fi spec-ops team I'd go for something punchy like 'The Legion'. You wouldn't know what they do, but you know they do it like a boss.

I am going to go with the Brown Coats from firefly. More of a nickname but I think it still counts for a unit name.

The 1st. Marine Intersteller Expeditionary Force (or 1st.MIEF for short) from Ian Douglas's Inheritance trilogy, basically there the military unit that thr future space United States sends off to deal with the the most horrible enemies that they have to fight (and this is a series were you can expect both sides to be bringing tac nukes, anti-matter warheads, and clouds of nano machines (that eat what ever they touch(read: YOU!!)) to even a minor engagement)

i a fan of the current Special Operations in Iraq, Task Force 145. Publicly we know almost nothing about their structure or current operators. Its speculated they're made up of Delta Force and DEVGRU, with support from the US Army Rangers, British SAS Sabre's, Central Intelligence's Special Activities Division: Special Operations Group, US Air Forces 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment The Night Stalkers, Air Force 24th Special Tactics Squadrons and the British Special Forces Support Group. Personally, i think it sounds kick ass :p

ODST's are pretty sweet.
Most Imperial Guard Regiments sound cool: How would you like to be a member of the Palladius Armored? The Urdeshi Storm-Troops? The Brontian Longknives? Also, the Cadian Kasrkins sound amazing.

Does....Jedi count? Because if it does, I win this thread so hard it's not even funny....

If it doesn't... Orbital Drop Shock Trooper is a very badass name because it actually means something, and isn't just some random cliched manly-sounding proper noun.

I mean I love Shepard.... but Spectre? Why would an Asari or Salarian even KNOW what a "spectre" is in the first place? Yes yes, I know. Special Tactics and Reconnaisance. But that's just so cheesy, that it conveniently makes a badass english word.

Sardaukar from the Dune franchise.

Image reference (not fluff accurate, more fan made... but awesome).

It's not sci-fi, but The Ghosts of Razgriz has to be one of the most epic military (technically air force) name I've come across.

Those guys are badass.

OT: I think of the Gray Death Legion, a mercenary unit in Battletech.

Section 9.

Even though it's one of those simple, Exactly What It Says on the Tin names, there's just something so indescribably cool about it. These are the people you call when 1-8 just aren't good enough.

Also, I love how the 9 is never written out.
