The Cornish Pasty.

Holy hell! I've posted two threads in one day!

What has gone wrong in the world?

*Sigh*...

Anyway!

I was reading the newspaper, since the 'funny pages' no longer make me laugh and the Sun seems to think that people go to funnies to see Wallace and Gromit fail at life or read barely even bad computer generated comics about vampires that makes PS1 cinematics look like James cameron's Avatar...

Upon reading the newspaper I discovered a small story tucked away in the corner of a double digit page that basically said that the EU have passed a law stating that the Cornish Pasty will no longer be called the 'Cornish Pasty' unless it is actually made in Cornwall...

Now I can understand that something maintaining it's namesake is... Well I guess it's good...

But isn't that just a little bit ridiculous?
I can't be the only one thinking that, right?

I mean does the EU not have more important things to worry about?

I would think that if a pasty is made... The Cornish way that it would qualify as a Cornish Pasty... Am I wrong to think that?

I may well be overthinking this, what with it being 6:15am...
I'm not even sure what relevant discussion could come from this thread, I just saw it and thought to myself...

'What the hell? I got to share this with someone...'

Anyone hear of any similar stories happening?
Or maybe just want to chime in on how stupid the whole thing sounds.

Have at.

- Archemetis.

Its funny, I have lived in Cornwall my entire life and never ate a pasty. Feel free to tell me how much I am missing out on :)

More on topic though, yeah I guess thats kinda mad. I mean, we make so called "Chinese" and "Indian" dishes over here and its not considered to be in the wrong, how are pasties somehow sacred? British county's get really stupid about this sort of thing.

I thought this thread would be about pasties.

I am disappointed and appalled that it is not.

As for the EU having nothing better to do... well, I'm from the US, so I have no idea.

But if they think it is important, then so be it.

I think the same applies to champagne, if it's made the same way somewhere else by someone else it's a sparkling wine. Also, various types of spirits.

So it's basically a repeat of the law that Champagne can't be called Champagne unless it comes from Champagne France, if it doesn't it has to be called sparkling wine.
I can see why they do it, but it's a really stupid law thats going to confuse people for a little bit then they'll go on calling them Cornish pastries regardless of were they come from.

"Soccer" was always called football.
It's America that' been doing it wrong.
And America's "Football" should be called Hand Egg.

Regarding the Pasty thing, this is nothing new. Here in england you can't call it a Cornish Pasty unless it's from Cornwall. Probably just the Cornish folks wanting more tourism.

Edit: Forgot my .Jpeg

Funnily enough that was mentioned in the article I was talking about.
I just had trouble remembering it because I've really not slept...

I should sleep...

They actually passed a law like that?
Seems really silly to me.
I mean out side of Cornwall how are people gonna know it originated there (if it did)?
I'd be like passing a law making it so you cant call French Toast that unless it is made in France.

As a side, don't the people that make the laws have better things to focus on, or does it work in another way I just don't get?

Well in New Zealand it was called Soccer. So I apologise speaking from a country that contributes to only 0.04 of the worlds CO2 n' CO3 gas emmissions.

Eh, that's ok, over here in Australia we can pollute enough for you. And also call it soccer.

It'd help protect the genuine thing. People are more likely to buy a "Cornish Pasty" than a "not really a Cornish Pasty, but it's just as good really", even if there isn't any real difference.

Yeah, hows thoses storms treating you? Because storms are for pussies and earthquakes are for us hard as kiwis bro!
All jokes aside, I can't believe this arguement was catalysed by a renaming of a type of food.

I don't think it's ridiculous at all.

If someone wants to misrepresent something and claim it's Cornish when it isn't, then that's a bad thing and I'm glad there's an actual law preventing this kind of dishonesty.

The thing about Cornish pasties is that it's very specific, so it's not going to be confusing or restrictive for people who want to make pasties, they just aren't allowed to claim they're Cornish when they're not (Cornish pasties can still be baked and sold in other places, they just have to be prepared in Cornwall, crimped in a particular way and use a minimum amount of good quality ingredients for them to be called Cornish).

Lots of local foods are being awarded the Protected Food status by the EU, and I think it's a good thing since it preserves traditions against big business and dishonest marketing and also guarantees a better quality of food for the consumer.

That is a very fair point, and I don't exclude, I just don't see how something that adheres to the methods that you mentioned can't be called the same thing, even if it's made ina different place..

Sure if it's mass produced in a factory in Germany, it'd be a stretch to call it an authentic Cornish Pasty.

But what if it was made by hand with the methods and ingredients a tradtional pasty-maker from Cornwall would use outside of Cornwall? Would it still just be a 'pasty'?

I'm gonna admit, this whole thing has been completely worth it for both the reaction it's recieved and the fact I've been called a 'coy little strumpet'.

I can't fathom why but that just makes my day somehow...

Yeah, well I have nothing to say to that, I just enjoy having the last word. Because I'm obsessive n' complusive.
