So the CBC put out this piece of fluff on May 2nd: http://www.cbc.ca/news/trending/the-dadbod-why-beer-guts-are-hotter-than-6-packs-1.3058032

And has followed it up as of the 9th with this: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/is-the-dadbod-trend-sexist-1.3066447

I don't even know why I'm bothering... You can see the pieces, you can formulate your own views and I'm curious to hear them. I didn't really know if this was an 'off-topic' or 'religion and politics' discussion. I don't know so it's in off topic, if the mods are distressed, feel free to move it.

I just... is it all just click bait sensationalism at this point? I almost wish I'd archived both stories to deny the CBC hits.

I think it's a joke article? At least, I hope so. Weight around your middle is a big no-no in health. A 6 pack isn't necessary, but the opposite is nothing to be proud of.

Please, read the two links. It is, unfortunately, not a joke. Neither is the seven day latter rebuttal.

I'm just annoyed at the idea that men don't know better.

Come on, fellas, we all know that being fat isn't attractive, end of. We all know the difference between being a big fellow, and being a big fat fuck.

We're not self-deluded, right? It's fine to be fat, but we don't try to trick ourselves to think it's attractive, do we?

My only problem with the Dadbod phenomenon is that it might fuel fairly problematic perceptions. Some people already trumpet their morbid BMI like a badge of pride, the bear-slash-fat admirer scene can sometimes actively encourage weight gain, and now we have this. Saying "I don't need to exercise, my girlfriend likes me as-is!" is reductive.

She'd like you even more if you had more stamina and a longer guaranteed lifespan. The only way to earn these involves exercising. Beyond that, how ripped you are is a purely aesthetic concern.

The phrase "BUT WHAT ABOUT TEH WOMWENZZ?!?!" comes to mind.

Apparently it's not OK to complain when women can do a thing but men can't without being criticised, but if we reverse the roles now it's suddenly ok to complain. Fucking briliant.

The "dadbod" is fine. It can be harder as you get older to maintain an "ideal" body shape. So long as they're not encouraging guys to get them selves up to hugely fat. When a lot of people hit their mid 30s they often have less time to exercise, and on either side there isn't really a problem with having a spare tire and being a bit flabby. What is ticking me off about this is a dual problem. One is that an unrealistic expectation on women to maintain an Ideal figure, even after having children. That's a quire bit of a double standard, but it comes from more other women more than men. If you're a parent and in a committed relationship, being married specifically, then you're probably focusing on taking care of your family, keeping a roof over your head, food on the table, gas in the car, and clothes on your backs. So it's understandable for either, or both to be a bit out of shape, and honestly it's fine, not everyone can make time for a fitness regimen. The other problem I have is the panic mongering that comes with this, basically the kind that equates any degree of being out of shape as being OMG MORBIDLY OBESE!
