I've just read yet another post somewhere on here about black holes, and how a scientific experiment using miniscule amounts of matter will destroy the earth by creation of said hole. For the record, black holes are formed by huge amounts of matter creating a ridiculously strong gravitational force; the laws of gravity do not change to cause a few particles to suck in the entire earth. I for one am getting tired of all the people who have a vague idea about something scientific and then spout doomsday theories about it. This is a thread for ranting about those theories. So, Escapist Community, what bastardizations of scientific theories have you encountered?

Note: I said scientific things. No 2012 stuff; there are already plenty of threads about that.

Erm.

I would comment on this, but as I am one of those who spout out doomsday theories from the little slivers of science I understand, I don't think I'm really in a position to open my mouth...

Damn, I was getting my 2012 game face on there!

I always hated those fundamentalist Christian "scientists" who say that all carbon dating is wrong, the dinosaurs never existed and the earth is between 6000 and 11000 years old. All they do is manipulate quotes from real researchers in their favour!

Radiation is a boogeyman. I've heard people worry about scientists "wasting their time" discovering new elements because they'd all be radioactive and that's bad. You're basking in (solar) radiation right now, not to mention the radiation from carbon isotopes and countless other harmless things. Not to mention that discovering stuff is hardly a waste of time, and how does she know the use of anything undiscovered?
