Well, after much debate, arguement, flames and messages, I've finally relented. I will.....try the player content that PC gamers hold in such high regard on their system. Perhaps not try per say, but try more in depth, as I am not completely unfamiliar with the player content arena.

Now, as many of the people I have had this arguement with will probably recongize, I do have a few games that most people agree are ready-made for modding. They are:

Oblivion + KoTN + Shivering Isles

World in Conflict

and most recently, Shadow of Chernobyl

However, since this (player created content) has been touted so highly, I'm not going to do most of the searching myself. I'd like to see what the PC gamers put forth as a demonstration. While I could stumble through the apparent hordes of mods myself, that probably wouldn't leave a very good taste for what there is, would there?

Either I'm tired or your post is fairly convoluted and unclear. Please fix that if you want some answers.

Empire: Total War has some great mods out if that's your kind of game - if you have/get it try out Darthmod in particular, makes the game far more realistic and interesting.

A bit of both perhaps?

What I'm basicaly saying is that after years of ignoring, I'm finally willing to look at player-made content for PC games. But instead of jumping into the huge, possibly dangerous pile myself, I'm asking those who already support it to give me some of their examples as to what makes it so great, and given them three games in which to do it with.

The best thing about Oblivion mods is that there are thousands of them and you can customize your game to the way you want it. A quick search for best Oblivion mods will give you lists of some to start with.

For Oblivion, go to TESNexus, it is the de facto stop for all Oblivion mods.

Good mods for Oblivion:
Midas Magick Spells
Oscuros Oblivion Overhaul
Natural Environments
Unique Landscapes
Lost Spires

the list goes on...

There are loads of mods for Fallout 3, check out Fallout 3 Nexus if you want to see some. The most downloaded ones are probably the ones you want to see.

For STALKER, if you have a very good computer (or what was considered a very good computer last year), get STALKER Complete 2009. For best effect, you should play a bit of the game without it first. It makes an already atmospheric game beautiful.

If you want player made content, Valve is the thing for you. There are basically no bad modes for valve games. Just look at stuff like zombie modes for cs, half life, all kinds pirate modes, RTS and other stuff.
Search in youtube for 10 best source modes and that's where you can see really great stuff.

For S.T.A.L.K.E.R: SoC, get STALKER Complete 2009 [http://artistpavel.blogspot.com/2009/04/stalker-complete-2009.html], it basically improves the original game, alot, doesn't fundamentally change gameplay, but everything is pretty much improved from the original game, graphics, music, AI etc etc, makes an immersive and atmospheric game become even more immersive and atmospheric.

We need to know what games you have before we can start rattling off mods.

I could list plenty of Diablo 2 and Fallout 2 ones alone...

Or Starcraft...

Or SupCom...

Or TA Spring...

Games I own (that are moddable, anyways)

Oblivion + KoTN + SI
Shadows of Chernobyl
TF2
CS:S
World in Conlfict + Soviet Assault
Battlefield 2 + All expansions
Sins of a Solar Empire + Entrenchment

Other games I own, but prefer to play in official online matches (meaning I can't have mods or I won't be able to play online):

Battlefield 2142 + Northern Strike
America's Army 3
RSV2
GRAW 2
Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3

EDIT:

I've read decent things about that Complete 2009 mod for Shadows of Chernobyl, but I had 2 questons:

Would a computer for which medium settings at 1440x990 resolution is pushing it be able to handle the mod's upgrades, and would it prevent me from playing online?

Hmm....I must admit, SoC:2009 does look mighty purty....but I think I hearmy laptop crying while I play it.
