Well, like the black plauge (and the fuzz) I've been trying to avoid the trailers and any attention for the remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still. Two things that first killed it for me without even looking at the trailers:

1) They remade The Day The Earth Stood Still!?! No! Just, no!

2) Reeves has a role in the remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still!?! No! Just, no!

I mean, this is savage butchery in its most brutal form. I enjoyed watching the black and white movie of yesteryear, complete with its bad SPX and little message. "Don't fight each other, otherwise you might kill yourselves." Neat, easy, done a million times, but it worked.

Now, in 2008-9, they seemed to have forgoten all that. As I watched the CGI wank off contest infront of my eyes, I felt like stabbing everyone how participated in the creative work of the remake and throwing them to the sharks. A bit harsh? God no!

The trailer all I saw was action, explosions, more action, CGI, building exploding, Reeves (damn him!), more fighting and action and so on. What's the moral of the remake then? "Don't fight each other... or we'll come down and rip you a new one!"

Even the robot, knowing he does look cool, seemed to blast a whole bunch of soldiers with his doom beam, something he only did in the first to some weaponry. That gave it a sort of, "Our weapons are far more advanced then yours, but we still wish you no harm," which now has been turned on its head.

So, am I the only one here that has seen the original? Am I clinging to it too much or does the new one have some merit for plain ol' dumb fun?

.

You know, we could still do the thing I said with the knives and the sharks... no? Fine.

Wha? Wha? No! Nooooooooooooooooo!

And there's explosions? The movie is a precautionary tale about war, and to stop fighting. Nobody even dies that I can remember, the robot just destroys their guns.

Be damned Keanu Reeves (I assume that's who you're talking about), be damned!

i will say what my friend said about the remake

if it's good then i'm a chinese jet pilot

if they did an almost straight remake it would have still been a great film, i say almost because they would have had to fix some anachronisms in the original to update it a bit

I agree. It looks as if the people responsible completely missed the point. Doubly bad because I have fond memories of that movie.

Remakes are only good if the original wasn't that great. John Carpenter's The Thing was amazing. Classics shouldn't be touched. What would people think if they remade The Godfather with top of the line CGI and massive actions scenes shot by handcam? Maybe they can star Shia La-whatshisface?

The movie could have been modernised, and maybe had a subtext of the war in Iraq (as much as I'd still probably dislike it), but this seems they have completely missed the point. I don't think they understood the point in the first place or they just ignored it utterly.

not always, some of the remakes are pretty good such as the texas chainsaw massacre and hallowe'en and there's a few others that are really good, sorry can't think of them off the top of my head

yeah i'm kinda thinking that, it was a movie that was anti-nuclear war at the height of the red scare when most ppl were investigated by the fbi for that

Just one more movie that I need to pretend does not exist. A shitty movie is one thing, but to take a classic and then face-rape it until all that is left is explosions and Keanu going "whoa" is something that needs to just be ignored.

Perhaps, but it was very much a period piece. Let's just hope they don't touch Dr. Strangelove.

You had to jinx it, didn't you?

I never saw the original but I've never liked remakes so it's on my not see list.
And Keanu has had some good movies like Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.
The only movies he acted in as something other than a cardboard cut out.

I saw the original. And I loved it. I saw the trailer for the new one, and it looks like a bigger bastardization then.... Jesus there is nothing that close of destruction.
I'm still comming to terms with why there's another alien race comming here to kill us? There was nothing of that in the original film.

I also heard they're remaking The Thing, and are going to do Atlas Shrugged, a live action Neon Genesis and are planning to make a sequel to I Am Legend.

I'll be in the cave with Necro if anyone needs me.

Fuck the caves, we have to kill the beast! Don't run to the hills, drive the abomination back into the sea from whence it came!

Mmm, sometimes remakes of classics can be good if they adapt it to a modern setting well enough. Disturbia was meant to be very good, even by people who had seen Rear Window. And 28 Days Later was a very good update of Day of the Triffords. It really just depends if they keep the same message and direction the original had.

I'm just waiting for Casablanca starring Hulk Hogan. /inside joke
But yes, this really is a tragedy of filmmaking. I've seen the original around 3 times, and I don't understand why there are explosions. Things hold still. That's it. It's right in the title. I mean, I guess Gort lasers a tank and some guns, but they don't explode.

As much as most remakes bother me, there are occasions where the remake is better. Like (in my opinion) The Fly. Now if they made it again, then I'd get pissed.

Disturbia sucked and was no where near as good as rear window. And who told you 28 days later had anything at all even remotely to do with day of the triffids?

Seriously engage your brain and at least have the slightest idea about the things you are typing. where were the plants trying to take over the planet in 28 days later?

You could of at least said war of the worlds as at least that movie had a slight correlation to an oloder movie. But 28 days/Day of the triffids? really I mean REALLY? your braindead if you think those movies have anything to do with each other.

Read the book, then watch 28 Days Later. Seriously, the layout, premise and morals are exactly the same, except replacing evil plants with a zombie infestation.

But they didn't have any blinding solar storm thingy.

On-topic, I will have to watch the original. I haven't seen the trailer for the new one yet.

Yeah, it looks like one hell of a bastardization, but they filmed it at my university, and goddamn does my university ever look badass in that trailer.

Although it was a pain while they were filming - more so than usual, since they had hallways blocked off and at one point there was a helicopter circling campus for about an hour while I was trying to write a paper.
