The Demo Problem

I play a lot of demo's, I like to try and get a feel for the games I think of buying (and a flavour for games I have no intention of buying so I can appear intelligent to people who have).

But recently I've begun to notice that demo's fail to impress me as much, I've stopped buying games I would normally. The most recent game I bought after playing a demo was Left 4 Dead, the main problem I have is that most new games have a new gimmick and everything else is not exactly original. Then when I've played the demo, the gimmick has been played, I've formed an opinion and the need to play the game is diminished considerably.

Is this something only I have experienced or is it a problem that the games industry has and I've only just become aware of?

(I used the very useful search feature on this site prior to posting this)

Case in point : Mirrors Edge - the demo was the best part of the game because you could play the gimmick.

For some reason I was under the belief that this would be a thread about the Demo(n)man from Team Fortress 2.
I was (thankfully) wrong. I used to play demos religiously, as I could not buy many games. Now that I can (and do) I've stopped playing demos, unless they are for yet-to-be-released games that I'm interested in, in which case I shall play through to see if the game lives up to my expectations.
