It's a good point but personally I think they can't. A plant doesn't really respond to physical stimuli except for growth. Why would they develop such senses when they can't do anything about it like movement?
I agree. It all depends on what you define as "pain". In the sense that we normally use it, plants to not feel pain. We do know that plants react to situations that would endanger them, in the same way that a sunflower reacts to the sun. I would not consider this to be "pain" however, nor would I contribute the reaction to some form of "instinct".
