Simple little thread.
Whats the most ridiculous thing you've heard/seen from a supposed "educational" channel on T.V?

For me, it's the Discovery Channel and its "Legend of the Crystal Skulls" bit. Seriously, crystal skulls are not a form of communication from ancient times, nor is heat an other worldly energy. I don't care what the apparitions are telling you. Sometimes people just make me lose hope......

Something about some random explosion being caused my 'Mirror Matter', sure it sounded cool and kept me sucked in but it was complete idiocy.

Wait, what is this about heat being of otherworldly origin? What do you mean by 'otherworldly', exactly?

Anything about ghosts or psychics or whatever along that line. Seriously, you think you can hear spirits? Well, when you meet my dead grandpa and he tells you to fuck off and leave him alone, give me a call. Cause then I'll believe you and probably tell you to do what he says.

in fact, i DO know that it doesnt just dabble in fact. Hence the "supposed" in my OP. Because generally, i find that people put to much faith in what they hear on t.v, and especially on certain channels, like The Discovery channel.

oh, god, this made me face palm when i saw it. They had a thermal camera on a guy and showed him at a certain temperature. Then they had the same camera on the same guy only touching a crystal skull, and showed how his temperature rose. Then the scientist(i use this term so very loosely) they had on went on to say "clearly, this shows that the skull emits an otherworldly energy". gah, i wish i could've reached through and smacked him.

Maybe he was embarassed over having to do something that fucking stupid in front of thousands of viewers. XD

Yeah, pisspoor scientific method over there. Straight up.

I've never heard of whatever crystal show you're talking about (it sounds like it takes the cake though), but I know I sigh deeply every time I see Ghost Lab. Shows like that annoy the hell out of me. Dude, when we slow and amplify the track to the point of incoherence, it totally sounds like someone said, "Hi, cheese-biscuit!" THAT MUST BE DAN HE LOVED BISCUITS! Or the stand in, "Holy f@#% what was that!?" Cue piece of lint floating past the screen. These people get air-time how? I can jump out of my pants at everything I come across in an empty building and tape it. Where's -my- freaking money?

What's really infuriating is that they actually act like they found something by the end of the show. Like I'm to believe that somehow the afterlife has evaded science for all human existence, yet some Discovery show manages to find irrefutable proof of it with -EVERY EPISODE-. All they ever accomplish is making themselves look more stupid with every iteration. Woo, victory! We have -successfully- taken advantage of the desperate individuals who suffered the loss of a dear friend or relative. Celebrate?

@Pyro: Wot? Spirituality has as many hard facts as science? I never knew. I guess I should watch Discovery Channel more often after all.

What are those facts? Do you mean like "it's a fact that some people believe in spirits" or "it's a fact that spirits exist?"

I could use some context here. Was this a show on the Cristal Skulls where they go around the world and talk to different scientist about their varying opinions on it?

If that's the case, and they simply showed a bunch of different scientists telling different opinions about the subject, and showing the various studies that they think supports their argument, then I see nothing wrong on Discovery's part. The scientists are still moronic, but Discovery is doing the right thing by showing the different points of view, no matter how stupid, of a controversial subject.

Hey now, in his defense he then went on to explain how the ancient race that communicated with skulls mde a face on the moon that's half human and half cat And how its not just a dune that vaguely resembles a face(an ugly one) on one side and a collection of rocks on the other that if you squint it looks like a kitty(again, an ugly one).

It's a show on either the Science channel or the discovery channel were they show people doing things in a slow motion and spew out physics related stuff. But there's no need for it.

yeah real scientific.

True enough. It's the difference between writing a report on a subject and writing an essay attempting to convince someone to ascribe to your point of view. The former is by nature considerably less biased.

Still pisspoor science, though.

yeah, they did. your right. except that discovery put this on the air and shows it every few days. I think there are more important things. like some finally explain to me whether gravity is a property of matter or space.

Wasn't that show called "Time Warp" I liked that show! It looked especially good on my 47" HDTV.

Yes to both of you. AND to jacob I liked it too. I don't know. Just didn't seem "science-y" to me.

Not science-y? B-But they had a high speed camera and everything! Surely anything being taped with a high speed camera is science?

You've got a point. The odds must be piled astronomically high against any randomly assembled body of dirt, rocks, and craters one sixth the size of the entire planet earth having any small stretch of it combine these features to create something that looks vaguely like the incredibly complex human face (we're talking two eyes, a nose, and a mouth here). They've convinced me. It's ancient space cat-people with the magical power to up your body temperature by half a degree.
