I'm looking at getting a DS now that they're down in price and I can mess around, but I have an issue with the wireless aspect, namely, the lack of support for WPA2 (my understanding is even the one that works with WPA2 won't let you play games with it).

I will not change my security settings, call me paranoid (also I don't want to change it on a dozen different computers, phones, pads, and whatnot for the house). Is lack of internet on the device going to be a problem (aside from multiplayer obviously), and if it is, is there any fix for it?

For the DS, the only reason to connect to the internet is online multiplayer. There's no patches, system updates, DLC, digital distribution, or anything else that you would need the internet for (at least on the regular DS, I'm not sure about the DSi). Basically, if you have no desire for online multiplayer, you're fine without internet. And let's be honest, there are only a handful of DS games worth playing online.

3DS is a completely different story, but the wireless support is better on it, although it's still far from perfect.

What DS model are you looking into? iirc, DSi and 3DS are able to use WAP2 security.

Keep in mind, some older DS games with online functions (Final Fantasy 3 comes to mind) can only use the WAP security. So, even if you use them on a DSi or 3DS, you're still limited.

The only DS games I get are Pokemon, and I don't play them online. When I need to get online, I swap the settings to no security, do what I need to do, and then switch them back. Router is open for all of about five-ten minutes, depending on whether or not I am trading. Seems fairly safe that way.
