I am of course talking about the Elite 4 in every Pokemon game, the 4 "strongest trainers" in the land that you must beat before fighting the champion and crowning yourself champion (which is funny because you never actually ARE the champion since you keep fighting Lance, the current champion).
I have beaten every single Elite 4 in every single pokemon game, many many times, and after the first time, it just becomes a grind fest. You fight the same pokemon again and again, and it never gets harder. The recent generations have tried to combat this monotony by changing up the pokemon the Elite 4 use and making them stronger, but that only happens once. After you defeat them the second time, the pokemon you faced will be the same you face for the rest of the game. For the purposes of lvling pokemon, that is fine and dandy. If you have the right team, you can bring 2-3 pokemon that will destroy every pokemon that the 5 trainers have. Currently in Soul Silver, my Armaldo, Lugia and Vaporeon are making easy work of the Elite 4, I don't even have to use my Metagross.
I had an idea to make the Elite 4 more interesting while fighting Koga (half of your moves don't work against Metagross, u mad Koga?). Instead of having the Elite 4 have a set party of pokemon, why not add some variability and make it so their party is created from a pool of pokemon?
For example, instead of Koga having the same pokemon, he could be a certain type of trainer that pulls from a pool of pokemon that satisfy that type. Koga could be a poison trainer and his party could be a randomized party of poison pokemon. Obviously these pokemon would still be strong, so no 1st stage pokemon, they would be fully evolved with a good set of moves. To create more variability, each member of the Elite 4 could pull pokemon from a pool of 3 or more types.
I also thought that the first 2 Elite 4 could pull from 8 of the types then 9 of the types respectively, and the second 2 Elite 4 could pull from a certain preference; namely offensive and defensive pokemon. The third Elite 4 trainer could have defensive pokemon (Shuckle, Bronzong, etc.) and the last Elite 4 trainer could have offensive pokemon (Scizor, Honchcrow, etc.). The champion would then pull from a pool of the strongest pokemon in the game (Tyranitar, Dragonite, etc.)
I'm still playing around with the idea, what each Elite 4 trainer would have, but the key idea that I keep consistent is that the pokemon they have change every time you face them. That way, each time you fight the Elite 4, it would be a new experience and keep things fresh and exciting. I mean, none of us enjoy grinding. We may not hate it, but we certainly don't like it.
What do you think of my idea?
