The Escapist 'Bland'?

Whilst browsing 4chan I came across a thread which ended up in a discussion of the Escapist. One interesting thing I found was this:

TheEscapist forums aren't rageworthy or insane, they're just.. bland. It's an incredibly boring place. I've seen Warhammer forums with more spunk.
Which got me wondering: is The Escapist bland? And, I must admit I found myself slightly agreeing with him. Through the idea that the forum should be a hub of intellect and the relatively strict moderating, it does lose a little of the interest that other forums, including 4chan have.

So, discuss. And think of this of the flipside of the numerous threads that crop up here praising us all the time ;).

A little bit, and I blame you people.

If you didn't report me everytime I called someone an idiot then I'd be able to flare up more often. Now you'll just have to settle for insults hidden as jokes and sarcasm.

Sometimes, and sometimes not. It all depends on the time I guess. We've had some pretty big things happen in the past.

You know what? That quote came from 4chan, which isn't the pinnacle of entertainment as it believes itself to be, it's just immature and pretty boring quite honestly.

We aren't a bunch of drooling cavemen who partake in gladitorial deathmatches. So yeah we are a little bland, but not too bland.

I must say I dropped my non-alcoholic beer and muttered a generally non-threatening phrase when I saw that someone had had the gall to ever consider us "bland".

I shake my fist at them in a mild and not-necessarily interesting way.

A bit, yeah.

I usually go to the user groups if I want some entertaining discussion. I do get some on the forums, but not as often as I would want.

Although implying someone is an idiot is a bit of a thrill sometimes.

It is indeed bland, as strict moderation cuts back on the unfocused and unbridled zaniness you might find elsewhere, and the typical forum thread is, as a general rule, hopelessly prosaic and mundane anyways. The content on the site itself is great, but the forums are plagued by a lot of boring people making the same topics over and over and over again. There are exceptions of course, but for the most part "bland" is as good a descriptor as any.

No, it may appear like that at surface level though. Like any good dystopian society, we only get interesting once you peel back the layers.

True, especially that "will I get caught or not" feeling. And seeing how far I can go.

Indeed, the fun is in the subtlety.

Yeah, these forums are bland as all get out unless you're either reading between the lines or writing on the wall. Doesn't change the fact that they're my port of call, though.

Blandness can be a good thing. I'd certainly prefer a fairly bland meal to one made with sixteen kinds of chilli.

Wait, you're not really Pimppeter2, someone hacked his account!

OT: I guess if you count "decency" and "not posting goatse in every alternate thread" bland, I suppose so. But I like the thinky brainy stuff on here.

Eh, kind of.

There's a reason why I don't post too often. According to my joining date, I should have way more posts than I do now.

I know.
Doing so is fun.
I wish I could find opportunities to do it more often though.
Ooh, how I miss the days when I got to do such things.
Those were good times.

Well, I'm sorry that we don't have all the porn and mental rape that 4chan has. But this isn't bland and its definitely less scarring.
