Welcome to the Escapist Community Showcase, where we're still hungover from last month's aftershow party. Last month, after chief editor and flask owner Lost In The Void decided to throw in a real prize, a total of thirteen scriveners ended up competing in the grand arena. In the end Yureina [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.319903-Rei-plays-Europa-Universalis-III] came out on top, and got her hands on a shiny copy of Skyrim. Now unfortunately there are no real games to be snatched this month, but surely winning such a prestigious award is an honor in its own right, is it not? Time to see who wrote the best review this month.

The panel of judges we used to keep things fair during Skyrim month is now, by popular demand, permanent. The original five, yours truly, Lost, Pimppeter2, Irridium and Zombie_Fish are still on, but we're also looking to get new people in. Timotei and pigeon_of_doom will help out in the future, and if you'd like a shot at judging yourself, well, there's no harm in asking.

While it's now up to us, and I use this term generously, professionals to decide who wins, it's still you, the people, who get to decide which reviews we deal with. This month, six people were thrown on the chopping block by their peers.

Maet - Hero's Adventure [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.313393-Indie-Game-Spotlight-Heros-Adventure#13198718]
Jack and Calumon - Ico/SotC [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.323911-JackandCalumon-Reviews-ICO-SotC-HD]
TimeLord - Ratchet and Clank [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.321435-TimeLord-Reviews-The-Ratchet-and-Clank-Series]
Marter/BlueInkAlchemist - The Last Samurai [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.326400-IT-CAME-FROM-NETFLIX-The-Last-Samurai]
Levethian - Skyrim [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.323793-Skyrim-Video-Review]
Julianking93 - Arkham City [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.324411-JK-Reviews-Batman-Arkham-City]
Now, without further ado, let's see who's pen was the mightiest

I had originally planned this for no other reason than the sake of novelty. I am, after all, not the only small-time Internet movie critic consistently cranking out reviews for the benefits of whomever takes the time to read my words. I have a Canadian counterpart (no, not my wife), who goes by the handle 'Marter' and can be found reviewing movies as often as he can at Box Office Boredom [http://boxofficeboredom.com/]. I thought it might be keen to collaborate on a review, especially now that my microphone is currently kaput and my alternatives make me sound like I'm yammering at you from an old coffee can tied to a bit of string. He agreed, and for our work I selected Edward Zwick's 2003 historical epic The Last Samurai.
It's the Marter/BlueInkAlchemist double feature! When critics of such calibre join forces, the sky's the limit.

I'll admit that when Arkham City's release date drew closer, I became fairly cynical of the possible outcome. How could something so unexpectedly triumphant as Arkham Asylum possibly have a decent, much less worthy, followup without the game crushing under its own weight? As the credits began to roll and I had completed my first playthrough of Arkham City, I immediately began to catalogue just what the game did wrong in my eyes. Unfortunately, the projected criticism I had even prior to release came true. And while I sat in front of my screen reflecting on the game, I began to realise that despite my somewhat heavy-handed gripes, as a whole none of it mattered. Rocksteady set out to create more of what made the original game such a joy to play and they've managed to outdo themselves in almost every regard.
It's JulianKing93! Julian dared to wrestle with the caped crusader, and won.

Way back in 1999, I once had a curious thought while playing Final Fantasy VIII, a Japanese role playing game in the spunky-teenagers-save-the-world mould. This particular game features a rather prominent dichotomy between the civilized and savage, as futuristic settlements litter a world where monsters still roam the countryside outside the city limits. One of the questions it caused me to consider was how technology could advance without complete dominion over the wilderness. Continental road and rail networks that could be interrupted by marauding monsters felt ridiculous, even by the loosest standards of fiction.
It's Maet! After all, Brevity is the soul of wit.

Another month, another victor forged in fire and ink. But why exactly did this piece win our hearts? Let's see what the judges say.

Maet has been experimenting with shorter formats for a while now, and I think it's safe to say the experience shows.

The piece does an admirable job playing with the limits of a traditional review, giving us wonderfully little but at the same time, all we need to know.

This review is meticulously crafted, exhaustive but not exhausting. There's a lesson to be learned here: Trust your audience. Give them scraps, and they will connect the dots.

Well the shorter formatted reviews don't usually make a splash with me. In general a short reviews makes for a poor review due to lack of detail and lack of focus. Maet is different though in his reviews. There is a razor sharp focus and an attention for the important details that make his reviews thorough without delving into thousands of words.

Great work Maet and keep at it.

That's about it for this month. Congratulations Maet, JulianKing93, Marter and BlueInkAlchemist and of course let's not forget our other nominees. As always we'd like to thank all our contributors and helping hands, our judges and everyone else out there kind enough to support this project. Without you, it would fall apart. And though we have no shiny prizes to hand out this month, our budget left enough room for an infinite supply of free cookies. Cookies for all!

These have all previously been in Off-Topic Discussion (to get those who don't come into User Reviews a chance to see it), so I'm going to move it there and hope someone else will swap the previously stickied topic (October) with this one.

OT: Congrats all. Curses that I still can't get higher than 3rd. Oh well, there's always next month.

So what you're telling me is that I shouldn't waste time writing a couple of thousand words on Deus Ex: Human Revolution? Duly noted. :)

As always, thanks to the judges for thinking that my nonsense is worth something. I'm simultaneously baffled by how I keep ending up being considered and thrilled that people seem to enjoy my shorter and perhaps more experimental reviews. And of course, a hearty congratulations to all who were nominated.
