The Escapist deleting threads?

I looked at the bar at the bottom and saw that there are only 20 pages of Off Topic discussion. Clicking back through previous threads where I posted, I realised that yes, threads that slip past page 20 are indeed getting deleted.

Not particularly discussion-worthy, but what do you think about this? I personally don't like it; the same setup is used on 4chan and I don't like it there, but here... I really don't like it.

EDIT: Looks like I was only half right - you can't get past Page 20, but those threads do still exist.

What are they supposed to do with them exactly? They've only got so much space on the servers.

I once had a thread of mine (a popular one) disappear. I looked up the time and date of the last post and tried to match it up with the rest of the topics on the forum and couldn't find it.
Never understood that.

I feel the same about that as I feel about every post I make.
"There goes another perfectly good waste of bandwith."

When you say something in real life, its not remembered for an eternity, same goes with the internet. Just because you said something however philosophical it does not matter to others, unless its groundbreakingly brilliant that some idiot steals it and puts it on a Tshirt.

*Ahem*

Bookmark it, Virgil can't delete bookmarked threads, whether out of server incompliance or whether from some internet bound "honour code" I don't know.

Well, what's the point of keeping really, really old threads anyway? I mean, they're past page 20 for a reason.

Really, really old? Like, 3 days old?

Because that's what's on Page 20 at the moment.

Seriously? Wow, didn't realise how much traffic the forums had.

They are not past page 20 due to being old, they are past page 20 because dozens of new threads are made every few hours. It's insane. It's also quite frustrating when some really good threads get pushed back by the tide of new threads at around 9pmGMT, as the US wakes up and starts posting.

Everything still exists somewhere, but unless it is bookmarked or you know the URL, it is lost

Doesn't bother me. My interest in a topic doesn't tend to span long enough to see it deleted.

Bandwith refers to the volume of active data transfers, keeping old threads wouldn't use up more bandwidth, it would just take more memory, and since they are just text and the occasional image, you could probably store the entire content of the Escapist forums on a $100 external hard drive.

PAH logic be damned!, I'll still be making my rubbish bandwith jokes over peoples comments till the cows come home (bandwith providing obviously).

So is that why Youtube embeds gets erased pretty quickly?, strain on the old copper pipes.
