I remember having a debate with my teacher about this. The fact of the matter is there is no way to prove that we exist or don't exist, you could be a figment of my imagination, but we don't know and can never know till death. As long as the idea that this world may not exist then in a sense it does and it doesn't until proven otherwise most likely from death, even then though one could dispute the fact that death is a figment of your own imagination and therefore does not hold any answer to your question.

So essentially, we will never know.
