Legality aside, it's probably great at emulating older consoles.
Reports are that it isn't, because it's too slow and laggy even for that purpose.

Damn! Smartphones can do it. Something's up, although you don't get the ouya because you want a powerful machine.

Really? A Smartphone can emulate a Nintendo 64 or similar?

Edit: properly?

Okay, I don't know if y'all have done unboxing videos before, but you need to go to youtube.
Amateurs are making significantly better videos. We don't need to see the person opening the box, we need are interested in the product itself.
A far better way to do it is: aim cameras at the box, show us what comes out of it, and give succinct statements on the items in question

So, how does it handle the controllers when you only have a touchscreen? Also, do you have any links to this emulator?

it worked with controllers over Bluetooth pretty good and no sorry I don't have a link, it's been years since I've been jail broken.

Sorry but I never got 'unboxing videos', package porn etc.

Just because it's literally about contents, doesn't make it good content.

The Ouya is an android device. Your Tegra 3 android phones are very similar:

It does emulaters

And you can use controllers: support depends on the game and where you got it:

EDIT: I've tried the Ouya. It has potential. What would really make it a great buy for me is the ability to use games I already bought incidentally for my phone from Googleplay. I just heard about "sideways loading" which allows you to do this. Brings me one more step toward getting this inexpensive box with inexpensive games.

Yes, you could use your phone, but for $100, to get the box, HDMI cable and controller for the convenience of having it always there (unlike my phone, which I'd need to set up every time before use) sounds pretty cool.

The only thing delaying me? My backlog of PS3 games is huge. I need to finish them before I move on to another console... and the PS4 is coming!!!

Ma'idah looks good in the video, and it is an unboxing (so it did what the title inferred), but I was hoping to hear the Escapist's opinion on the interface, hardware and games. Also, the music was not exciting, it was aggravating. I muted it. Too loud, in an attempt to make the video "exciting".
well they did say in the video that a full review was upcoming.

Something weird I just noticed: The Ouya costs $99.99 on Amazon.com and £99.99 on Amazon.co.uk

Converting from USD to UKP should make the Ouya about £65. Even additional transport costs shouldn't amount to £35 per unit. So do the guys at Ouya think all currencies are born equal? Or do we have Amazon to thank for that little price imbalance?

Still not as enthusiastic as this guy:

Honestly, I didn't think anyone could be enthusiastic about unboxing the Ouya. Its like unboxing an Xbox One, except worse. Everything I read about this console is depressing right down to the bad controls, bad performance, and shovel ware games. Every single review I ever seen on this console is a red flag after another.
Did he sell it to ashens? :p
It also sums up anything that could be said about it so well.

Have we seen unboxing videos in the Escapist before? I can't recall having seen any.
In any case, I approve! Sure, sure, there are some suggestions as how they can be made better, but I like the idea of the unboxing FIRST impressions.

Duracell batteries? Are you SHITTING me?!?
I know, eh? How about a 900mAh Li/Io rechargeable battery, they are dirt cheap (especially in volume). Even a 650mAh would do; this is a casual gaming machine anyway, it is not likely one will do a 12-hour Skyrim play. Anyway, let's wait for the actual review :)

Also, that isn't gunmetal grey, that's fake silver.
Hand over your man badge, buddy.
Err, what?

Wouldn't a real man know that the shiny silver plastic is nothing like gunmetal grey, which is a dark, matte color? You know, like the barrel of a gun?

Yeah, not very well, though. That's the point.

You can "do" emulators on many things, but making them perform well, or properly emulate the original is a whole other issue.

I can play FF7 on my galaxy nexus (still have my original ps1 discs). There's a lil frame dropping here and there...but for the most part works fine.

Cool vid. They should have spent more time on the front end and outsourced the controller but hey it's not like I work in HCI or something.
