The Escapist Presents: Preview: Xbox Dashboard Update

I can't wait to waste more of my valuable hard drive space for another pointless dashboard update! If Microsoft keeps updating the dashboard and taking up my hard drive space, they can at least let me exchange my 20 gig hard drive for a 60 gig hard drive. I know that the dashboard updates don't take to much space, but I'm starting to run low and I would like to save my memory for games. This really sucks because I was hoping to download all of the Fallout 3 and Grand Theft Auto 4 expansion packs.

Meh - looks alright. I've said for ages that the Nintendo avatars should be customisable with unlockables, but it would seem Microsoft has beaten them to it - and good on 'em! I resent the fact that they're going to try making people pay for items though! Besides middle-aged American housewives binging on Arcade puzzle games, who can honestly justify such a ludicrous waste of money?!

If they want to charge for anything, they should have a studio download, where people can create and share their own creaitons a la Second Life. It'd be so much cooler to have a fully customisable avatar!

According to Major Nelson's Twitter page the update is only going to be available for those chosen for the preview and the fully public version will not be up until Aug 11th.

Can anyone confirm this?

Im glad to get the achievement progress stats BACK. (They took it out with the first big update that added avatars) I had fun knowing what my 1000th achievment was. (Ironically, it was beating Halo 3 on Legendary)
Paying for avatar items however...well
I wont be buying any.

Hopefully they'll have some free ones on release. I'll see if they pick me for the testing, I hope they do.

Yes, if your chosen you'll get the update July 31st only 11 days before, but still...

As a side note, if the Awards work with existing games... oh god. It's too good to imagine. Fable II gear, Fallout 3 gear, Mass Effect gear, Prototype gear, COD 4 gear...

The only unfortunate thing, in my opinion, is that avatars won't be allowed to get weapons. I understand why - they don't want to deal with the fallout from doing it - but I'd still like my avatar to be kitted out with a broadsword or something

Can't wait, but this doesn't become "live" on Monday. If you signed up for the preview program, you then have a slight chance you will get the update on Monday. But this isn't being released to the whole public until August 11th I believe.

all that stuff looks cool but i dont think i would waste MS points on avatar stuff unless they only cost like 60 points like what i have left over that cant buy anything. I also need to get my XBL connection back, my adapter is busted and now i have to pay $100 for a new one

There's a couple cool things there, but nothing that makes me want to rush out to buy a 360. For instance: The props and awards. Though having to buy the props isn't. Not too fond of buying things for online avis for real money, personally. I'd rather buy games! Lastly: I'm NOT bashing the 360, just commenting!

Look at all those little kids with large pocketed parents! The little boys will just have to beg their mothers for their little clothes for their avatars and their parents will buy it.

I would never buy anything like that.

Good to see that there are going to more items available for the avatars, hopefully that will go a little way to help them look more unique. I wouldn't mind dressing up my avatar in some Steampunk gear either!

Actually having to pay for some of the avatar items. Hmm, I'm not too sure about that. I usually restrict my XBL spending to DLC and demos/games. Paying for a new suit for my avatar seems a bit rich, really.

US only though eh? Ah well, guess that's just too bad.
