Is it me or do many new escapists whenever they join do the following:
make a few polls of random stuff
get banned
then become more mature

Not really I just wonder why newbies (including me when I was one) do it.

The Escapist is a bit like the Grey Knights from 40k. At first you go through tough physical tests. If your one of the 0.1% that past this test then you have your courage, honour and faith in the Emperor tested. If you show unbreakable faith then you are shown the un-speakable horrors of the warp. If your one of the few that don't go insane you get to come here and talk about videogames.

I do feel sorry for all those loonies we make though. maybe we should be a little bit more relaxed in our training programme.

I've been VERY careful not to get banned. It's hard sometimes, sometimes I just want to write obscenities to people who really piss me off. But somehow I've managed to suppress it.

I haven't made any stupid polls yet or got banned.

I've just made a stupid thread and a few stupid posts.

Newbies do tend to mistake us for the IGN forums sometimes and make "vs." threads or the like. Firmly but fairly telling them that that's not what The Escapist is about usually sets them on the right track, and if that doesn't work then the moderators usually catch up with them before they become a pain.

Just be civil, and they may become the next great poster.

It's difficult sometimes. You just gotta keep your eyes on those Matrix badges.

I remember when I first joined.
1)I've never made a single poll and never even voted in on for, I think, a few months afterwards
2)Never banned once. just put on probation, for some combination of words but do not know which one did
3)Maturity is kinda pre-requesite(spelt right? so tired) to the escapist, seeing most of the topics, save for the ones made by (quoting an old user)"refugees from 4chan"

No, it's true. Does this have any other purpose?
After surviving massive rants from Fish Food and Jumplion (is that right?) I think its fair to say I am at least one exception to these rules.

1. I didn't create a thread for ages. I spent my time replying to others.

2. I was put on probation after around 700 posts, after replying to Yahtzee review "Good review", - the probation was lifted.

3. Nope, If anything I'm less mature because I was incredibly careful about what I typed when I first joined, now I just ape what I think regardless of the other-persons opinion (the majority of the time).

I may be new my good Sir, but relaxing the training program sounds a lot like Heresy.
Then we shall stricken the training program. All new users must now fight 20 Great White sharks with bears attached to their heads. Thats right, Bears! Laser Beams are so 90's. Bears are the way of the future.

And now to bring this baby back on topic: I kind of agree with what zen5887 said. Theres always going to be those that are linked to ZP from IGN or GameFAQ's and then decide to rock up on the forums to see whats "going down." I don't mind these people, aure they're as annoying as hell but they symbolise something better. Eventually most of them figure out the Escapist isn't the place for them and go back to their cavesbut the more intelligent people stay and the Escapist is better for it. It's a process that warps, grows and shrinks over time but as long as ZP is here there will always be shitheads that stay for a week and great people that stay for years.

Frankly, I wouldn't have it any other way. Everyone whines about ZP bringing in the retards but everyone forgets that it also brought in most of the respected posters, yours truly being one of them (at least I think I'm respected).

...I never got banned. Anyways that's just them trying to get active, then learning when being too eager becomes annoying. It's called learning. Or adapting, depending from whence they come.

I was brought here by unforgotten realms so I feel smug. I have been playing devil's advocate for 550 posts now and not a ban on record; oh we will have so much fun as I make my way to 5000.

You think you've got it bad? I plan on getting a neo badge, and I'm an asshole by nature. It's painful to be polite, but it will be mine...precious...keanu/neo...

I got banned six thymes (pun!) before I got mature enough to think of something better than, 'What's your favorite folk music'?

When I first got here, I was new to forums in general, so I tried to be very careful.

And as you can tell from my Morpheus badge, it seems to be paying off.

I've yet to actually create a thread. Mainly because I haven't got any creative ideas for a subject, and I'm afraid of being flamed for wasting your time x)

Anyways, ZP brought me here, and I'm doing my best to contribute some degree of sense to this wonderful place.
