I'd have to say Sonny and its newly released sequel, sonny 2. An awesome RPG that in my opinion, are one of the greatest flash games of all time.

Knytt Stories is an atmospherical platformer, very beautiful and is mostly incredibly relaxing and sometimes puzzling. There is a also a large amount of user created levels on the site, so you practically never run out of new areas to explore.

Flow and N are pretty awesome. Also check out Alien Hominid, Tetris (several free versions online), and the free games on GameTap. Most free games are proof of the old saying "you get what you pay for" in that they are not worth paying for at any price (not even free in some cases) but these are a few of the gems buried in the rocks.

Crap. Downland certainly didn't get any easier as I got older, did it?

However, if you'd like a standalone, bugfixed (and updated, somewhat) version of the best game the CoCo ever saw: Dungeons of Daggorath PC port [http://mspencer.net/daggorath/dodpcp.html]

I just played that. Awesome. Also, didn't the Behemoth make a Castle Crashers-esque game called "A Boy and His Dad"? That was hilarious fun, right there.

I was wondering when someone would say cave story.
ok another one is "I wanna be the Guy"(Link in post below mine...)
It is a game that requires zen like patience to get past the second screen. I have killed three bosses, and died well over 5000 times. on easy. This game is NOT for the weak of heart/will/agility. It will leave the best gamers crying.

[edit: misread topic, thought it said "favorite 'three' games"]

Star Control 2: The Ur-Quan Masters [http://sc2.sourceforge.net/] - Re-released in a free form, I think this would go on my "favorite games of all time" list, and not just my "favorite free games" one. There may not exist another game with as much epic win to it.

Dwarf Fortress [http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/] - It's obtuse as hell, and genuinely punishes its players with crashes and unavoidable learning experiences, but it's still one of the deepest and most interesting simulations in existence.

Psychonauts [http://www.gametap.com/play/gameDetails/000475950] - It's been free through GameTap for awhile.

Cave Story [http://www.cavestory.org/] - I'm not drooling over it as much as some players might, but it's nonetheless a little dose of magic that was much appreciated.

Nothing that hasn't already been mentioned, I suppose. I guess if it wasn't really, really good, I wouldn't mention it as my favorite.

I'm compiling a disc of free games that people can copy and pass on to friends and family that have received holiday PCs...some of these are on there already, but I can see I'll have to add some more.

Prelude to Darkness [http://www.zero-sum.com/index.html] - A kickass free indie rpg with the best charcter development system ever, use based + skill based with no levels. I think the main link to download is broken, so go to the forums and ge the 1.8 version from the 1.8 thread.
Looks like they copied Ultima.

The ones I steal

I uhh...mean the ones that are given to me as a gift.

I really dig Slime Volleyball if anyone has ever heard of it. I can remember spending entire afternoons trying to beat the big boss slime, it was EPIC.
