Hey guys. I thought I'd do a pretty serious thread and bring all our ideas to the table, have a bit of a rally if you like.
So it seems that lately there's been a growing consciousness within our wider gaming community that the medium is really starting to get the recognition it deserves. I don't know if it's just me, but it seems like all of the talk of us, the people who support the medium of gaming most of all, to help it evolve and move forward if it's to be recognised by all as something much, much more than a mere plaything, or senseless violence in an easy-to-reach format for kids and 'juvenile' adults alike, is really starting to take effect. That's a pretty harsh caricature of the more extreme views, I know, but we're all on the same page here just being Escapists.
So what makes me think we're really starting to move forward? You don't have to look far; the incredibly well-crafted and wonderfully intellectual Extra Credits [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/extra-credits] featured right here on The Escapist is a good indication of the kind of people we have on our side, and a brilliant example of how we should regard videogames. The action by the UK government recently which could benefit the industry is also an indication. Perhaps not as a direct action aimed at the gaming industry, but it's acknowledged by Prime Minister David Cameron as something which could benefit it.
Hell, just today my university lecture involved a theatre of roughly 100 of us watching the latest episode of Zero Punctuation [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation]. When I asked the speaker if he was in any way affiliated with The Escapist, his response was "No...that'd be awesome/amazing though." I couldn't help but agree wholeheartedly.
It might be slow, and the results are sure to be eventual, but I think we're already starting to see a massive paradigm shift, and we should all be proud.
Thanks for reading guys, please discuss.
