Ok, so a lot of people thingks that DRM are annoying crap that just annoys honest paying customers and cost the producers extra money, other thinks it is the greatest thing in pirate fighting since the man-o'-war.

Now, Inspired by the way 'The Saboteur' handled their nipple problem I belive myself to have come upon the solution, namely: Make the DRM DLC! That is to say downloadable content.

That way both sides have the oppertunity to play their games the way they like to!

As in... the protection would be completely OPTIONAL? The hell is the point of that? Then the pirates would get a game, and torrent it without the BS protection..

Also, who would download it? I'm pissed I cant make a virtual copy of games. Why would I apply it? Plus you'd only apply it to the files on your hard drive, not the disc, so the disc is always unprotected unless you download the entire game WITH DRM and rewrite the original disc.

And lastly, you have a physical copy, why would you feel the need to have copy protection, personally? The only justification in the first place is to prevent piracy, so unless you wish to circuitously stop YOURSELF from pirating YOUR PHYSICAL copy to other people after you install it...

I'm sorry, but it just doesn't make sense to me, on any level.

If you want a "Final Solution", I'm perfectly willing to see one implemented at Sony DADC and at Ubisoft...

The largest problem with DRM is that it doesn't even stop pirates, and then poor Joe actually bought the game upgrades his computer a few times and can no longer play the game since he's reached his "activation limit".

Thankfully EA seems to realized how fucking stupid this was and isn't using it very much anymore. Bioware even had to advertise that Dragon Age DIDN'T use an activation limit protocol.

As mentioned already, making DRM optional will solve absolutely nothing since no one wants it. Why would someone go out of their way to install something that's a hindrance?

Think I'm with Shru1kan. Optional DLC is about as useful as a piece of paper with "please don't steal our game, bro" written on it.

Does the OP have any idea what DRM is?

Hmm. That's possible. Of course, long experience on the internet has taught us it may not always be sensible to attribute to sarcasm what could be attributed to white matter necrosis.

I think he means include a "critical" part of the game as DLC, maybe a boss you have to beat or something. Just throw in a card with a free code for it with your copy of the game. I can see how it would make a viable alternative, and it sure beats the hell out of activation limits, but it would be too easy to bypass.

I've run into far too many clueless people on the internet to offer benefit of the doubt anymore.

While it's nice that someone is trying to create a solution to this problem, I can't say I agree that creating a DLC for a DRM is any kind of answer. As Shru1kan said, who would download a DRM, whether or not they actually paid for the game. The problem with DRMs is that they were annoying to the end user. The intent was noble, but the application in the end stunk (namely with Spore). EA has lead most of this front with inserting a serial number when installing, which isn't so bad compared to other attempts to this problem. That one seems to be the least intrusive, however, key generator sometimes can get you around that.

Unless it were a free DLC, I'm sure devs would rather charge a minor fee for this to ensure somehow that each copy purchased was receiving a DRM. Of course, they could just track the download logs, but that might create a job they didn't want and therefore enforce the reason for a service charge.

Game pirates will not want anything to do with DRM, free or not to download. Their intent is to bypass the purchase and get something for free. Nobody wants those DRMs, pirates or otherwise. But they are a necessary evil for now until there is another version of DRM. In this day and age, there is no getting around it unless you can figure out how to stop pirating. Short of that, we're stuck with DRMs.

This. I mean, if someone is joking there a certain tone to their post. I read this as straight as an arrow.

I think Arkham Asylum went about fighting piracy in a very good way. They made it so use of a no-cd crack disables Batman's gliding ability, meaning you can't get past the first 10 minutes of the game. THAT right there is how to do it.
