"Gamer" would probably be the best term for it, I mean, we're all gamers, words like noob and pro just symbolize different types of gamers.

I consider myself an expert gamer. I may be a noob initially in the MP form of a game, but after a short period I catch up. Not so bad for a 53 y/o gastroenterologist. I play many games on different platforms- XB360, PS3, PC, PSP, etc. I feel that being considered an expert gamer should also include the knowledge about the multiple platforms and adaptability. Pro gamers usually practice and compete. I consider myself like a golfer who knows the game but does not compete for money. If one can pick up any game and start playing after reviewing the control scheme, then you are an expert gamer. If you compete and are ranked then you are a "professional gamer" like a MLB or NFL professional. MLG and the like are pro's who practice such as team Fanactic. Unfortunately many other gamers do not have the patience to allow a new player to get to speed.

cause simply put everyone is a noob by most standard definitions at one game or another and you're sometimes really good at others. while you could be kick ass at counter strike you might suck at starcraft, hence my system of classification. there's also the fact you could be at a friends playing on their keyboard/controller setup rather than your own so you are adjusting to it

In the middle, where you're discussing, people are not really recognised. When a match finishes people always look at who pwn3d the most and who is the biggest n00b. No one really looks at the middle, if you had a name, it would probably just be your username or gamertag or whatever.
i have this too at times i am realy realy good at games not becouse i have played them for 80 hours straight just becouse i am the problem is that becouse of that in the begining when the game is just out i get kicked from every server becouse im too good
especialy with frontlines fuel of war and other battlefield like stuff im your anoying ass sniper killing everyone on the other side of the map but i do that not for the score i do it becouse im good at it i mean if your good at driving a vihickle your not going to go on foot do you and its just fun for me i mean i can understand some ppl hate it to just die seemingly killed by nothing but i dont care
however after playing fuel of war for some time there was this big group of assholes who got on the servers and totaly fucked up the community i always have this i play a game online its fun for a while but then i get annoyed by the sheer amount of people who join the game just to be assholes to others
this is the reason i make four groups of people
1.newbie:not so much bad at a game but its more that hes never played the game before and isnt good at it yet
2.n00b:these are the people that have played the game for some time and still arent very good at it usualy after some time these people turn into people from category 4
3.the guys who are good at the game
lay fair as in no teamkills and stuff
4.extreme assholes:these are the guys that make me stop playing most online games within 2 weeks i think this is theyr meaning thoa anyway these are the guys that if they get killed often by someone from category 3 they switch teams to go teamkill them and stuff
and a lot of other things they do makes them anoying but thiss will just become a rant if i go on (i think it already is sorry guys its late and ive just been backstabed by someon in category 4 so)

well I've always thought of the pro vs noob thing as more of adjectives applied to the word gamer.
ex noob gamer - just starting out or ignorant either through lack of experience or deliberate effort.
pro gamer - getting paid to play
since gamer is understood by the context it's dropped. So after 4 years of gaming you should hold your head up high and just say 'I'm a gamer'
it also fits very nicely between the two extremes defined by noob and pro.

I say 'we' because up till I noticed this thread, I thought of myself as a hardcore newbie, as in I would be playing all different games, but never felt inclined to try for top score ... and obviously, since I continue to play games, I don't hate games for whatever reason, thus a noob.

a noob is someone who calls OTHER people "noobs" and actually means it. although it IS fun to enter online games and call random people "noobs" to see if they react violently. i think there should be a term for people who use the word "noob" seriously... fucklet always made me giggle
... I'm a Gamer Otaku. I'll let you try to guess what that means for my likes, but I will say that no matter what type of game it is, Gamer-Otaku's will sit there and do everything over and over until they are at least proficient. Also, we play games mostly for fun, and usually don't use terms such as noob, 'cause, for us, that just means play more.
I agree with that. people who only call others noobs to be jerks are the real noobs. What people dont think about is that we were all noobs at one point or the other, and when they forget that, people turn in to real a-holes. we should all just get along and play nicely.second only to The One said:
So, I've been playing Team Fortress 2 for the last month or so. The first week I was insta gibb everytime I poked my head out, but the I got the hang of it and remembered some of my mostly forgotten multiplayer skills from the old Quake (2) days. Nowadays I usually end up on the top 3 on the scoreboard of any given game, but I do not consider my self a hard core gamer as such. I concur that some middle term is needed between n00b and psycho/pro/hardcore/whatever. Casual could do, but there are many ways to understand that. I am only casual in the sense that I don't play as much as I used to, but still, 15 years of gameíng must amount to more that casual. Or what?

I'd agree with this. Also I don't use consoles (or a TV any more) so I'm purely a PC gamer.laikenf said:
I've found noob to be in the eye of the beholder. for example one of my friends puts the hard in hardcore and he considers me a total noob even though the only time I lose at almost anything I'm playing against him, of course in 40k he will only play a codex that is almost 2 editions old (Dark Eldar haven't seen a new book since the start of 3rd ed. and we are almost at 5th) and every time I(in the event that I have to play him) complain or refuse to play him until he gets a newer book. He will beat me at most other games though, except if we are doing PVP in an RPG system, I'm way better at most pencil and paper RPGs.
