Starcraft.

I went into a 3v3 map in the Top vs Bottom section and picked zerg. While I was still barely making my base I was steamrolled by a group of siege tanks and goliaths. I had maybe 6 zerglings and 2 hydralisks.

my first online game was unreal tournament for xbox it still holds soem fun lil memories for me and my lil bro coz it was also the first time i ever completly kicked ass at a game.

pitty the sequal was so crappy with all the mortal kombat stuff and the refocus onto melee over shooting stuff though

I lanned Dark Omen with my friend when we were really young and it was groundbreaking to have more than 1 PC in the house, other than that I played Unreal Tournament quite a lot I think I only ever did facing worlds though.

First game I played online was Diablo II on Battle.net. Good times.. Had to ask every time I wanted to play, and I didn't have my own computer either. That part was quite annoying, because it was my brother's game and we shared the computer, though in practicality, he owned it apparently. But sometimes he was nice to me and let me play Diablo II

I think it's either between gears or COD3 since I had them at the same time when I bought my 360. I know I sucked incredibly badly either way, I've only just recently started getting better.

Quake II. It was awesome as multiplayer. The first MMO I tried was Ultima Online and it was just unplayable. I just hated it... resisted MMOs till WoW, which thankfully I quit about six months ago...

Runescape. Back then, just the idea that their were other people playing the game in the same world as me was mind blowing

Duke Nukem 3D and Doom over modems. When I got the 'net, it was Quake over a shite modem connection. Later I dabbled with the Aliens Online game, which wasn't much fun over dialup.
And then my friends started having LAN parties. Quake, Hexen, Duke3D, Warcraft... The awesomeness of the Quake Superhero mod is difficult to describe with words. "Ants in the Pants" in the lava-filled DM map was a griefing joy.
