The first post

Its seems that some people try laboriously to get the first post to a new thread before someone else does, and it is somewhat often to the point where their post consists of just one unrelevent word, One would say that the first postee's own ego makes them do this and they'd probaly be right, especially when the OP has too of an large off an amount of text. Whats your opinion.

People just like the feeling that they don't suck, so get good feelings from useless and pointless achievements. Being first, or getting all achievements in a game are good examples.

I first saw it on Slashdot. I think that it partly comes as a result of people only having the patience to the first x comments on a long thread so someone had the idea of replying quickly with "first post". It's seen as a "meme" as people do it mainly because they have seen it done. You could see it as a joke in the style of "all I do at work is refresh the Slashdot main page and I get paid," or a criticism of the posting system as in "early commenters don't read the article or think they just say something inane in order to be seen."

After all who actually searches through every page of a thread with 10+ pages?
Usually i just read the first and last pages.

I'll always read every page if the posts are interesting,and so I don't get flamed for saying the same thing as someone else

If a topic is really interesting, i might read through it all when i'm posting from home. But since i commonly check it at college, in the middle of my lesson, i don't have all that time.
So i generally apologise in advance for if its been said before.
Also i often lack the patience to read through plenty of bad, one-line comments to find the ones worth reading.
