The First Templar (my bad experience)

Okay , so I'm a fundamentalist PC person , so I don't play on consoles. I didn't play many action games so I decided to try The First Templar - it was new 2011 and the trailer/screenshots looked promising.

IN THE BEGINNING
At first the game was great , lots of action , good graphics , interesting story and a well balanced fighting system (or so I thought). The first problem was the camera that just moved unnaturally with the mouse - if you've played Fable : The Lost Chapters , then it's not as decent as that.

AN ITCH
Later dogs showed up that I could only kill when they jumped by using a QTE or if I failed by tapping a button like crazy after they pinned my character down. A bit annoying but still ok.

A PAIN IN THE NECK
Further on I had to close a gate to stop enemies attacking a fort. I run to the wheel to close the gate hoping my allies will defend me , no such luck and I die. (3 times ) Then I figured out to close the gate an inch , kill 20 enemies , close the gate another inch and repeat until done. And the fun part was some enemies were armored (more health) and had shields you could only bash with special attacks (you have to kill enemies to charge those up). I did swear in anger , but I continued playing.

FRUSTRATION
I encountered Hashashiyyin , which are warriors who are ALL very quick , and once they get health too low they start doing acrobatics and you can't hit them (they ALL do it) and of course once they use a back-stab on you , you can't interrupt it. Also , they learned the dog tactic , only now pumping a button to escape is mandatory.

RAGE QUIT
The last straw finally came in a citadel with traps. I drank a beer waiting to see a pattern for a fire trap but at one point it just exploded once I passed by it. And the fun part was I can't judge distance properly (the camera problem) so I can't tell if a fire trap is going to hit me. Then a trap with spikes where one character holds the door open for the second , so if the first character dies there is NO way to revive them. I finally snapped at a spike trap with an odd pattern where I couldn't judge whether spikes would hit me or not.

For my first action game it was an absolutely miserable experience .
So , is it because of my PC ?
Am I just bad at action games ?
Should I buy a console ?
Are there any GOOD action games for PC ?

Will check out Darksiders then , as soon as I get the chance.
Do these sort of games work better on consoles ? You know , like RTS works on PC better ?

Third-person games and platformers work really well on consoles but most types of games work best on PC. If you want most of the benefits of a console get a gamepad. Besides that there's really not much you can do about bad game design, which seemed like the biggest problem here. Also I find cameras much easier to control with an analog stick than a mouse. If a gamepad doesn't do anything for you then maybe a console would be better.

I doubt it's a case of the game being better on console.. that just sounds like a terribly realized game.

I've seen videos of it before and while it did look promising on some levels, it also looked like a (very) poor man's Assassin's Creed.

I'm genuinely confused, tough and cheap enemies do not make for a bad game, or maybe I didn't understand the point OP was making.

First Templar is on my radar because it's coop and I'd like to play a game of this time with my friend, so am looking for genuine criticisms or compliments of the game, so as to gauge whether I should buy it or not.
I'm afraid this rant indicates me very little.

It's not that the enemies are hard it's that they show up at the worst possible moments. During the main quest when you have to quickly close a fort gate armored enemies keep pouring in and it takes a while to kill each one and by then the next wave approaches.
The same happened in a secondary quest with agile enemies who start dodging blows when they are at low health and you have a limited amount of time to close a gate.

In co-op it may be easier. Having a reliable friend rather than an idiot AI is much better. At least with a friend you can coordinate beyond "follow" and "wait" . Just be careful at the traps , the camera is a complete pain and you can't always judge whether a trap can hit you or not.

Sorry if this seems more of a rant than an objective criticism of poor game mechanics but I just had to vent the frustration.

This game is just bad, I dont see how you still enjoyed the beggining of it.
At first it was decent. The enemies were in decent quantities , there were no QTE or pump-the-button mechanics and the story did seem a bit interesting.

No worries about venting, can understand the need for it when your frustrated about a game xD

Yeh im starting to see what you mean, poorly designed fights those seem to be.

Still think people are far too eager to jump on the bandwagon and criticize a game they didn't particularly care for in the first place, nodding and agreeing like yesmen when very little information was given in the first place.

As it stands, will take to note that combat might not be properly balanced, but as coop might remedy the faults you mentioned, for now will stick to cautiously learning more about the game before deciding if its worth the money or not.
