If the world is flat, how come I can see the Earth Curving away towards all Horizons when I go flying?

There's no good logic to this conspiracy, except maybe as cited by the man above me.

After scanning the site the most "logical" answer I found;
that if the world were flat that would prove fundemental physics wrong if that were true people would have to embrace creationism as it would make more sense and governments wouldn't be able to push their agendas like abortion and homosexual marraige.

Nice.
But that's not what passes for logic these days, is it?

Crazy conspirators are like fundamentals of . Full of bullshit and impervious to logic.

Just leave them alone, it's a wasted effort to try to understand or change them.

Though I'd love to live on Discworld, hahahhahahahahahahahaha.

Somewhere on the Hub.
I think you guys are getting me wrong. I don't want to change them. I know they are batshit crazy. It is just the Nasa part that bugs me for some reason. If you read through thier logic it is somewhat plausible. Batshit crazy but logical in the batshit crazy way. Until you get to the Nasa conspiring against the world to keep the fact that the world is flat secret. I just would like to hear a theory of why Nasa would hide this fact. Invest money into hiding this. It can't be cheap, has got to be alot of work and it seems for nothing. Unless I am missing something that they could gain from this.

The only reason I could think of would be that they want to control a large volume of information, thus giving them more power over what the public believes.

Of coarse, I'm that guy who believes that the egyptions had electricity and that aliens gave them the techology to guild the pyrimids and yet, even I don't believe in the Flat Earth theory.
realy? do you?
Of course not! *glances around nervously*

I just say things like that for comedic effect.

Although I do believe in things like starting sentences with capitals.
Well you spelt course wrong :p
I also ended my sentence with a period.

You know the saying: stupid questions have stupid answers?

Stupid theories have stupid reasons.

I like the idea that NASA and all the Goverments in the whole wide world are hiding the fact that the Earth is flat for shits and giggles.

You have a sooooo many wacko goverments out there that can't agree with anything, but when it comes to hide the flat earth they all friends...

-.-'

It's easier to achieve world peace then hide a huge Wall of Ice from the public.

Yeah but it's awkward to end with a period after an emoticon. Otherwise it'd look like this :p. Like a mole on a chin.

Edit: removed the weird quote boxes above me

Well, really there is nothing preventing Joe-average Retiree from deciding to live off his boat and see the world, and a lot of these guys sail around the globe for fun (it's a relatively common dream). I see no way how any conspiricy could conceal something like this.

I do however think the logic of most conspiricies fall apart when the big "reason" is something like "there would be panic".

There are some conspiricies that I feel are relatively reasonable, and probably true. But a lot of it comes down to scale. The more people that have to be involved the more unlikely any theory is. Even with some kind of "cult" your just not going to be able to conceal something that would require the unity of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of people.

Then save the emotions for AIM, or some other instant messaging program.

Now lets stop derailing this thread before it's too late to turn back.

Sorry.

Anyway as i stated previously, there is no real logic to this. The person who mentioned that it would force creationism is the only thing that really makes sense.

Ok, after reading through as much info as I could find, it becomes pretty clear that it's all crap. I mean, lets face it, the stuff they can't explain they attribute to "dark energy". What a cop out. That being said...

There is a certain amount of awesomness to the idea. How cool would it be if this were true?

Why do people lie at all? And, anyway, they probably just want attention...

Frankly, if the Earth were round, then all the compasses in the world are bullshitting us, since there would be no North. Just Rimward and Hubward. (100 points if you get this reference)

No, the compass would still work, it just point to the center of the earth, not the "top". This is one of the worst consipericy theories I've ever heard of though...just wow.

A few days ago I followed a link a fellow Escapist posted and found the Flat Earth forums. I read thier FAQ I was afraid. For those of you who may not know they believe the earth is flat and at the edges are big ice walls that prevent everything from falling off. And Nasa with the governments of the world have conspired against us regular folk by doctoring photos from space.

So here is my question. WHY? What would anyone have to gain from hiding this fact? Every other conspiracy theory has an end game. They are trying to accomplish something. Aliens have landed and the government is hiding it. Why? Because if the public knew there would be panic. Or the country with the alien could gain an upper hand in the technology race. Faking the moon landing so America could give Russia the finger. These all make sense. So what would anyone have to gain from this? Can anyone offer a logical explanation?
-snip on the rants of an idiot-
Wow way to be an illiterate D-bag. If you had read the post you quoted you might have seen that I don't believe but just happened onto the site and out of a quest for knowledge actually read through it. I wouldn't expect someone like you to understand a concept like that though.
How dare you Squid, how dare you believe the Earth is round, I mean thats blasphemy, is that what you will teach our next generation of children? the Earth is round.

I for one am disgusted by your antics, I can say your "stupid" (air quotes even though they aren't air quotes) theory of the Earth being round and spherical in shape is completely wrong!, it in fact an oblate spheroid.

huh, some people.

I don't think you'll ever find any written historic evidence that anyone thought the world was flat.
The belief people from ?olden times? thought the world was flat is a myth.
This. Actually, the whole "Flat Earth belief" thing was made up by the author of a 19th-century anti-catholic pamphlet called, if memory serves me right, "Beliefs of the Church Fathers". It basically contained a lot of malarkey about how the early Christians and medieval theologians were a bunch of idiots with no knowledge of the world around them. The "Flat Earth" thing then got popular with American journalists during a period of anti-Irish sentiments, and that's how it entered popular consciousness.

In fact, the "Flat Earth" thing was never believed by any serious scholar ever since someone climbed a mountain and looked around. Or even earlier than that. I mean, the only thing you have to do is notice that stuff progressively disappears below the horizon as you get further away from it.

Seriously. I was in the worst mood this morning, and then I read that site's FAQs and now I'm kind of bubbly. This is awesome. So incredibly awesome.
