What makes some forums rack up replies like STD's in Thailand while some other, probably more thought provoking forums (not this one), seem to shrivle and die alone, unloved, and with only a handful of replies?

Maybe some posters on the more thought-provoking threads provide such good answers that nothing else needs to be said, while others are pure nonsensical fun.

If it's controversial or involves bashing someone a person doesn't like, people will flock to it. Simple as that.

Welcome to MY world. I try to ask questions about the state of human nature or old classic movies from the past and don't get squat sometimes. Fortunatley most of the time people do actually respond.

When it comes to controversy, it doesn't matter if people like it or hate it. Likers will post in support, haters will bash, as most bashing occurs in said controversial topics.

The thought provoking ones do usually get a lot of responses though. But popular easy to answer topics are usually what attracts people.
No, the topics that pander to the lowest common denominator get the most replies, and people allegedly don't have time to think about poignant topics.
It's this tiresome simplistic and tiny thinking of the masses that lower the standards of any great website.

I find some of your topics interesting, Vrex. It's just sometimes I choose to stay out of the conversation because of some of the heated vocabulary being tossed around, you know?

Well that sentiment screams of pretention. Im sorry but "high levels" of thought cant possibly be achieved every second of every day, what happend to the fun aspect? Or just you know, not taking shit so seriously.
True. I know I come to these forums mainly to have fun...I spend most of my time in the forum games section, where I can just spout off whatever kind of weird crap comes into my head most of the time, without risking moderator wrath or having to think too deeply about my responses. I do enough thinking during my offline time. While I occasionally pop into the more meaningful threads, most of the time it's a brief foray into the cerebral zones.

This is a thread, not a forum. The forum is the format of the website. A thread, or topic, is what we're discussing. So this would the the thread thread (which may lead to confusion among The Escapist sewing circles - is my Metroid quilt done yet?) or a topic topic.

Anyway, I'm just being nitpicky. I do that when it's late.

Not taking any shit seriously whatsoever is why eight patron users have left the Warcry forums.

well,i usually go to ones that sound funny. as in "the most badass person ever" or "let's make some friendly controversy" as well as more serious ones, like "can suicide be rational?" or "what's your most favored apocalypse?". or when they ask stupid easy to answer questions, such as "do you consider yourself a nerd" YES! it depends on the certain people who would go to it. pick a good topic that people will look at and say "hmmm...looks ok" it depends on who you're trying to send the forum to. certain people like certain forums.

When there's strife, there is joy.
Charnel teaches us that.
The threads with controversial topics are therefore the most interesting and enjoyable ones.

HEY FANBOY, I WANT SOME HOLLY!

Good times.
Heaps of it depends on quoting.

"Party till you pass out drink till you're dead, dance all night till you can't feel your legs."
