League of Legends [http://www.leagueoflegends.com/] is completely free. It's a multiplayer DotA type game, and it is very active.

The only thing you would need to pay for is skins, and seeing as that doesn't effect gameplay at all you're not ever at a disadvantage for not paying.

It's like a PvP RTS/ARPG mix.
