Masons? It's just a weird social club. And you could intiminade people by saying you are a Freemason. Join in! And if you can't,make your own secret society. With blackjack and hookers.

Freemasonry is kind of dying these days as older members are passing on but not as many younger recruits are coning in to replace them. If you go to any Freemason-type do what you'll notice straight away is the enormous amount of old people there. It's also not a good place to meet girls because there kind of aren't any. Freemasonry has been trying to update its image a little and be a bit more open than it used to in the 1950s when it was all very secretive and 1 in 5 working men in the US were members, ebcause they're starting to realise that even "secret" societies need a bit of a PR campaign sometimes.

To be honest there are better clubs that you could join if you wanted to meet people, socialise and grow as a person. The niche that Freemasonry used to hold has these days been replaced by all sorts of other activities. Freemasonry isn't anything all that special. It's nothing to be all that afraid of, either. The worst thing that can happen to you there is you can waste a lot of time with a bunch of men standing around talking about stuff when you could instead have joined a club that more women are into and then spent that time talking to girls about stuff.

You lot sure pay well for entertainment. The local Freemasons near us paid £1500 for 3 hours worth of my function bands time. Practically stealing when you're playin covers and, once split 4 ways, being paid nearly 400 quid for it!

I did notice their was an air of snobbery about the place though...

I also used to work as a waiter at Bletchley Park (the ex-top secret place in England where the enigma machine messages were decoded during WW2) we onced catered for a private party of Freemasons. They had the same arrogance and rudeness about them. It gave me a negative view of them over all I'm afraid.

Do you ever hear of that in your group?

Do it.

A chance to see semi-secret societies is a lovely one. I would love the opportunity, myself, but they're a secretive bunch.

I'd do it, just to see if there's any truth to the weird code phrases they drop into casual conversation just to covertly establish membership and rank in public situations.
yup we do, don't even need a phrase since there is the secret handshake as well

that's the same with any group. depends on who it is really, i've met a few that are snobby and some that aren't. it's just like meeting people at any function really

Wait, does this mean if I espoused a belief in myself, I could still join?

Anyway, go for it, I guess?
Then come tell us everything about it.
It's not specific so, in a very technical sense, you can be agnostic, hell even Scientologists meet this requirement.

Edit: Good luck trying to convince them that you're not insane, though.

Read This book [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_God's_Name]

It shows that the whole Free Mason thing is basically a mafia. Unless you have some burning desire for hidden knowledge (that probably doesn't exist anyway) don't join.

Join the other fun secret society, the IRB!
i always thought that the IRB was disbanded around 1924 and replaced with the IRA.
That's what they would have you believe; but we all know the real truth.

...also, I'm pretty sure that advancement in the Freemasons is determined by how well you can keep a secret; I think you just failed the first test.

Who are a terrorist organisation. Yeah what a bunch of nice upstanding citizens!
By that logic the founding fathers of USA were Terrorists.

As was William Wallace.

They were/are good men and women fighting for their land and freedom from British oppression.
No those men you listed didn't blow up peacekeepers and innocent civilians, whereas the IRA did.

Listen this Thread isn't the place to argue our different sides and too be honest, I'm tired of argueing my point across the internet to people who I most likely will never meet.

I also doubt that anything I say will change your mind. just as nothing you say will change my mind.

I will say this though, it was war, people die in war. In fact people are still dieing in a war that is supposedly finished.

Every innocent death was and is regretable but most that were lost could have been avoided if the English had just treated us fairly and released Northern Ireland.

I know at least one freemason, and have been invited to join.

They mostly seem to have social events every week or so and raise money for charity. I think for many people it's largely a form of social club, but with added rituals.
