Racism and housing discrimination is sooooo much worse than white people think it is.

Starts off with a story of a black family getting their beachfront resort straight up stolen by the KKK and having the modern day city pay "reparations" by spending $350,000 on art and zero for the family.

Which kinda sets the tone for the whole segment. The people/government does a big ol' racism and ineffectually "fixes" the problem over half a century later. Cheap home loans from the Federal Housing Administration jump started the middle class during the Great Depression... as long as 0% of the housing in the neighborhood you are trying to get a loan in can let a black person ever live there. "Racial covenants" built into deeds saying you Could Not sell or rent or let a black person live there.

The median white household wealth is ~$190,000 while the median black household wealth is ~$25,000 and it all ties back to the '30s, because of course it does. It was only nominally made illegal in 1968, but is still, to this day, horrifyingly prevalent. Due to how taxes work, the wealth disparity snowballs through things like public schools and services

If we actually manage to stop the discrimination but do not do any targeted recovery, we are looking at a full two centuries until that wealth disparity evens out.

Dude, you cant give money to black people. That would be racist to whites

Edit: forgot to add: Puts on a Hawley or Cotton voice: Giving money to black people is racist against black people

Oliver covers that actually: plans to fix the problem end up colorblind, dramatically reducing the effectiveness of said fixes and occasionally, due to the systemic nature of racism, made the problem worse. There was a colorblind program that gave tax breaks to new property purchases that ended up being a gentrification program because most of the money went to relatively affluent white people.

You forgot "your house will be valued more than twice as high if you're white".

Like that's the thing that's wild to me just as an outsider. In America there was still very very overt racism as recently as when my parents were children. Like nobody is denying that Jim crow happened. Even republicans have to just hope we don't talk about it because you really can't claim it didn't happen. And like half a century ago it was made illegal to EXPLICITLY discriminate against black people. And white Americans want to pretend that that leveled the playing field? That black people in America have had the same opportunities to succeed as everyone else?

Right, I forgot about the appraisals thing.

Too much racism to summarize.
