There is no fate but what we make for ourselves.

What I'm asking...is what do you believe in? Fate? Destiny? Pure Luck?

Personally, I believe everything is what we make it. We have no pre-set destiny, there is no set line. Everything is chance, luck, and using your own intuition.

Also, you get a cookie if you know what movie that line is from. I'd give you more, but it's a well-known movie.

Yup, pretty much chance and our own actions.
This, pretty much.
We can't really say that everything is pre-planned and that it's our destiny.

Hmm, this could get interesting. If the future is not set, does that mean that with a theoretical time machine you could go back in time and change the past, therefore changing their future?

On a less paradoxical note, I think that because the past is set, and humanity likes to repeat its mistakes so much, the future is not set, but neither is it especially hard to predict.

In a smaller sense, life is determined by each person. Some people attribute their actions to a higher power and use that to abdicate responsibility for their deeds, either good and bad, but I think a person is as a person does, their future stems from that, and nothing else.

Whatever luck we have at not seeing black holes appear in our solar system ;-)

Every single choice. If I now decide to switch my computer off and watch TV downstairs instead, that decision could quite possibly hold a large impact on something further in my life. Or not. Who knows?

And I like the idea of travelling in time presented in Lost. I.e. we may be able to go back to someone else's past, but we are always in our own present.

Aside from chance, life is what you make it. Actually, even when you throw chance into the mix there's usually scope to make your own choices with it.

This.

People are people; not what someone or something else makes them to be.

Of course it is funny when a 'tempt fate' situation comes up. It seems that the future is not predetermined unless someone says something that is obviously just asking for trouble.

Case-in-point, when I 'taunt' games occasionally for a failed trap, only to have another situation immediately spring on me out of the blue that works. Okay, it's just a coincidence really, but it's amusing.

I believe that some things are going to happen, no matter what we do, but what comes after those events are determined by our reactions. This is why the future is impossible to accurately predict, because as the Oracle said, we cannot see past the decisions we do not understand. So, ultimately, our destiny is determinded by a duality between pre-ordained events, and the unknown reactions to those events.

Does it matter?

Whatever happens, you can always claim it was destined to happen, or that it was pure chance. We'll never know which is true.

It's like God, only even less important.

"He who controls the future, controls the past. He who controls the past, controls the future."

Which came first - the chicken or the egg?
And does it really matter?

What is - is what is, what will be....will be. Hindsight is ever perfect while foresight is ever flawed.

I like to think that it's a chaotic system.
For those who don't know, chaotic systems are not completely random. They are deterministic.

No destiny.

Also, if I think that if you went bac in time ad say... killed your Father as a child, you'd still be born, but the you that would have existed before you killed him, would cease to exist.

that's called a paradox.

anyway, i believe that since you can't change the past, you can't change the future. i see that the majority of the site is against me, but whatever, it's what i believe and i have a right to express that.

I believe in karma; essentially what goes around, comes around. Not because I have experience with it, and not because it's rational - because I have to. What kind of life do I lead knowing that I can't even change my own fate, or worse still that my destiny is arbitrarily defined by random charms and curses? So I just try to be good, believing as strongly as I can that it'll come back to me.

Yes, but it would be interesting to experiment with the idea wouldn't it?

I'm a determinist.

Meaning: I believe everything is planned out before us. The future is a set path upon which we walk. And all that philosophical stuff.
