However what he is *not* is Gordon Freeman from the future. I seriously don't know where people came up with that or how they support it.
I don't subscribe to the belief, but I remember aside from the similarities in name, the fact that they both have the same eye colour (or at least when compared to marketing images of Gordon Freeman) was one thing people often pointed out.

First of all, GMan was a term coined by the audience, not by valve, and it is a general term existing outside of the realm of the game(Government Man, referring to his similarites to a shady CIA or FBI type guy)

I don't think that a fan made made label having four letters in common with a name and no other traits a valid support for such a ridiculous theory. The only worse one being "Gman is Gordon's father." I mean seriously, wtf?

Like I said, I don't believe in the "Gordon from future" theory. But the two of them do both have very distinctive green coloured eyes.

I have no freaking clue.
But like the stories of my favorite horror author... I'd like it if I never knew. I don't want to know what he is because the aura and the mystique thats been given off by him is enough to have this speculation.

Which i think are better than being told... I dunno, he's a space realtor or something.

He IS. And the mystery is what makes it so compelling. It's like a legend.

Where one person can think hes the figment of Gordon's imagination or the next person could think he works for Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. And someone else just theorizes he's just some dude dicking around with us cos its fun.

Valve;
Don't tell us. Or if you do, give me enough time to cover my ears

There are multiple theroies on this subject and any one of them could be correct.

He could be a future version of Gordon. The Facial features do seem similar and even the name is strange

(G-Man, Gordon Freeman) Of course this wouldn't explain the speech.

He could be, as plenty of people here suggested, an Alien envoy. Sent to Earth by his Employers. Of course only a hand full of people have seen the G-Man and strangly they don't seem to have any recollection of him. Odessa Cubbage for example, can be seen talking to him from the telescope at the Combine camp, There is a scientist talking to him in HL-1 and Alyx and her father seem to have had a run-in with him.

the list could go on, but these two seem to be the ones that stand-out to me. Only Valve know's the real answer and hopefully we'll find out about it in HL 2 Episode 3.

Given his speech never quite sounding... human... My guess is that he's an envoy from another alien race, working with some shady time police organization in the future. Or something like that.

Christ, that sounded less cheesy in my head.
... you mean, a TimeCop? Man I love that JCVD movie.

I'll be honest, I have no idea. Maybe he's just a talented nutter.

To be honest I really have no idea why he or his employers would be interested in Gorden Freeman in the first place, I mean you really arn't anyone special in the BIG picture. And why would a alien enity care about the human population on earth?

edit
I'd say many watching forces would be interested in Gordon Freeman. It's hard to deny he is a special figure. Almost single-handedly pushing back a pan-dimensional empire is not exactly a simple matter. Walking straight into their capital on a planet and blowing it the hell up, before stealing the codes to the combines homeworld, before getting out of the blast consuming city 17, before surviving the combines every attempt (and they get quite severe) to kill you specifically.... Remember this is a force that overpowered earth in 7 hours and Freeman walks into wherever they're strongest and somehow, walks out again victorious.

Well, I myself tend to dwell on the name as a hint, but considering the "G" part, I'd rather not go into what the first thing that pops into my head is.

Other random idea: He is based off one of the main devs or someone else off the team who created the game, someone with a G in his name.
He's called the G-Man because that's what government agents are called. G-men=Government men.
He isn't ACTUALLY from the government, (I think) that's just the way people saw him, they thought he was.

G-Man is certainly an interesting axillary element in the war between humans and the invading aliens. I think Eli found out something interesting about G-Man, but we may not get learn what that is. I seriously hope we find out.

G-Man doesn't seem to be terribly invested in the situation at hand, but his motivation for placing Gordon into the battle at just the right point doesn't seem to be just to test out his newly acquired employee.

I guess all we can say for now is that he is a businessman on a massive scale, with mysterious powers who has some interest in Earth or humans.

Haha it did indeed. But I have to agree with you on the alien race bit, not to sure about the time police thing though. Lets hope we find out and that they don't pull another Firefly on us.

Actually, if you guys open up the hammer editor, and look, it actually says npc_gman. So it is not just a fan thing.

I think he is from an alien species that want to see the overthrow and destruction of the combine. They engineered the event at Black Mesa so that the Combine would find Earth, and invade, and then they chose Gordon as the one man that could destroy them.

If I recall correctly, he is never reffered to as "G Man" in the game. this is his unofficial name given to him due to his appearance, a man who looks like he works for the government.
Nah, that's the name of his character model in the original Half-Life, so it was an official name, and the fans adopted it as being his true name.

As many of you probably know, the Half Life series is a FPS developped by Valve. Recently, I beat Half life 2 and Half Life 2 Episode 1, and am currently in the process of beating Episode 2. And there is one question that keeps reacurring in my mind: Who, or what, is the G-man? If you don't know what I mean by the G-man, here is a picture from Wikipedia:

Now, if you have played the games in the series, you will have noticed some things, perticularily:
-He seems to be monitering Gordon Freeman, as well as other characters(such as Alex Vance) at almost all times
-He seems capable of physicic communication
-Able to halt time at will
-Able to traverse dimensions
-Ablility to disappear
-Seemingly invincible
-Obviously the puppet master behind many events

But thats not all. Something I found perticularily strange is how the Vortigans(who are phsycic) are able to not only interact with him, but hinder his actions(at the start of Half Life 2 episode 1 the Vorts' Free Gordon from the interdemension where the G-Man was holding him). Also, The G-man is constantly refering to his "Employers", who apparantly have an agenda that concerns Gordon, Alex, and other characters.

So here is my question to you: What do you think the G-Man is? Is he good? Evil? Who are his "employers"? Why does he see the need to intervene during certain events? What are his motives?

Personnaly, I realy have no idea who(or what) he is, or why he does what he does. Which is why I came here: Who is the G-Man?
Obviously in a secret relationship with roman bellic.

Yeah, but if you look at them both, they've got a totally different facial structure and hairline.

I think the employers of the G-Man are an alien race like the one from 2001(The movie/book), only less willing to help the human race but is more inclined to stopping the combine from taking over the universe, and could not care less for the Human race and Earth. The G-man is likely a repetitive of the "highest bidder" as refereed to by Dr. Breen, and Gordon is likely one of his unwilling agents to help him with his task.

I also believe that is the single most dorkiest thing I have ever wrote, and will likely never do again because no one will likely ever read this.

He is the current big-cheese of Aperture Science Incorporated, obviously.

Seriously, how ELSE would a human get that kind of special tech/abilities!?!
Then why was he helping Gordon in Black Mesa.
