S.T.A.L.K.E.R., definitely.

There's something to be said about a game with this amount of atmosphere, where even going outside at night becomes something of an issue with willpower. When you're hanging around in the Rookie camp, about to go complete a mission, and suddenly you hear a bloodcurdling howl coming from the distance. That's usually when I think to myself 'do I -really- want to leave this camp?'

Also, any time the game requires me to enter a dark tunnel/sewer. Paralyzed by indecision.

AVP2 - Marine campaign.

This is one of the only games that will actually make you jump - literally.

It also helps that the start of the game was used to build suspense without actually fighting aliens. There were several places in the game that this occured. Another area that comes to mind was after the sewer vehicle escort level. You branch off and have to go through these unlit corridors and all you have is a half dead flashlight and some short lived flares. *Sends shivers up my spine just remebering* Of course as soon as the flares burn out or flashlight dies, the Aliens attack!

I have always wanted a remake of this game using a new engine. Monolith have made some of the most Atmospheric games to date.

I need to buy/ rent Condemded 1 & 2.

Also, F.E.A.R. was pretty good if you like Japanese horror/ little girl horror stuff.

I am highly anticipating Colonial Marines by Gearbox. I hope they get it right!

I'm kind of surprised no-one's mentioned the Project Zero games yet. There's nothing quite as terrifying as having vicious ghosts jumping out at you shouting that they're going to rip off your flesh when the only defense you have is a camera. Plus the whole ritual sacrifice plots are truly, truly vicious.

Apart from that I agree with you guys, some great games on here.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that LoZ: Majora's Mask is the game with the best atmosphere, but no one can deny the amazing atmosphere that game created. During the whole journey (and a great one it was) I felt nothing but confused; I felt like I was trapped in some kind of fantasy limbo, like a fairy tale nightmare that just kept repeating itself over and over again. It was a totally alien world if you take the Kingdom Hyrule into consideration. In conclusion, I really felt like I was playing a game created by Franz Kafka.

For me it's God of War and Diablo I, both equally immersive to me. Rock Band comes close...

The gamecube remake of Resident Evil 1. Only game i ever had to turn off at night because i couldn't take it anymore. And no, not because of the control scheme ;)

I'm surprised.

Though mabey I'm just a PS3 fanboy. Ha ha ha ha (I know my jokes suck)

My thought is Resistance: Fall of Man

When I played the level inside Northern Command I took a couple breaks.
I played it at night and with the brightness on my t.v. turned down so when I got to the big room when you meet the two howlers I couldn't even see the floor.
Around every corner- croutched, and with the flashlight on.
Especially when enymies come up from behind you.

for it's time and for being an rts, Bungie's Myth 2 had a great atmosphere. the ambient sounds were really good along with the trees and the shadows and snow. first game as far as I know to have a really dynamic and destructible world with lots of physics candy.

Christ, erm.. Fallout, HL1, HL2 and both episodes, System Shock 2 and Halo 1 to name a few. There can be no winner.

EDIT: Just read one of the above posts, STALKER is definitely another very atmospheric game, and in all honesty the scariest I've ever played. Worse than Doom 3 which previously held that title. I can't go in any closed environment in STALKER. Way too scary. I am always on the verge of an apoplexy with Snorks and Bloodsuckers so I have to press 'Esc' and shut it down. Seriously, I am shit-scared of this game but I love the story, atmosphere and general premise all the same. I TRY to play it and fail.

Haven't played Condemned, so it's between System Shock 2 and STALKER.

Seriously, the freaking enemies in that game (STALKER) are just NASTY. Cloaked face tentacle guys? Get out. There was one particular moment that was great: I loved when I turned off the Brain Scorcher, woke up, looked at my radar (where the nearby enemies total was), saw '20' where '0' used to be, and went: "Fuck."

SS2, every reason stated already. It just grabs you.
