You knew it was coming. The internet is clogged up with these to the very brim. But, they're fun, so why not. Let's all share our top 10 games of the year. Indulge your ego for fun and profit!
Without further ado, my list! As if you actually give a shit.
10. Penny Arcade: On The Rain Slick Precipice of Darkness 3
Very funny, great writing, an exceptional battle system that is complex and challenging where other JRPGs dumb themselves down to oblivion earns this indie gem a place on the list.
9. Star Wars: The Old Republic
Yes it came out in 2011, but I only started playing in 2012, so, sue me. As much as the internet seems to despise this game, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it. I thought of it as a Single Player Bioware RPG with 8 storylines, and in that context, it was great.
8. FTL: Faster Than Light
Just 5 more minutes...Just 5 more minutes...Just 5 more minutes...
7. Borderlands 2
I loved Borderlands 1, Borderlands 2 earns the same honor by not fixing what wasn't broken. Functional gunplay, great loot and guns, enjoyable characters, a great world and surprisingly decent story.
6. Dishonored
Completely forgot about this. Dishonored is a fantastic stealth game with an exceptional aesthetic, a fascinating world, great combat, and a decent story. In terms of gameplay, it may well be the best game of the year.
5. LEGO Lord of the Rings
It's Lego. And it's Lord of the Rings. What the fuck else do you want?
4. Halo 4
I was not looking forward to this. I was expecting a CODified version of the only pure FPS series I still enjoy. What I got was an incredibly human story about two lost souls looking for their humanity, an engaging multiplayer mode, the awesomeness of Spartan Ops, and giant mechs stomping all over the puny humans.
3. Spec Ops: The Line
To explain why this game is so good would be something of a spoiler but I'll say this: Spec Ops could very well be the Watchmen of modern video games. Yep.
"The Horror...The Horror..."
2. The Walking Dead
The Walking Dead is an incredibly linear Farenheit clone that advertises it's huge degree of choice despite the fact that, in the end, none of them really matter. Perhaps that's the point. Whatever way, that doesn't take away the fact that the Walking Dead was an emotional thrillride that never ceased to amaze me with each passing episode. Telltale's finest work. Made up for the fact that the TV show started taking the stupid pills by the bucket load, and the comic decided that coherent storytelling was for chumps, and we're just going to be dark for the sake of being dark.
1. Mass Effect 3
BUT THE ENDING! IT WAS HORRIBLE! Yes, voice in my head who tells me to strangle puppies, yes it was. It was utter shit. But, in all good faith, I couldn't give my Game of the Year to anything else. Call me a pussy, but I caught myself tearing up no less than three times in Mass Effect 3, and while it certainly has it's flaws, the experience I had playing through that game was utterly magnificent, and was unbeaten by anything else this year.
So, what's your pics, fellow Escapists? Try not to ***** about other people's choices, they are subjective opinions after all.
Edit: Completely forgot about Dishonored
