Please watch and then discuss.

All I would like to do was to incite a discussion on whether The Human race could someday be like what Charlie Chaplin was saying free from all the hate and greed.

Is it bad if I found this far cheesier than any message at the end of MLP:FiM?

Not 100% sure what there is to discuss here. Humans are hateful and greedy and we should rise up against them to reestablish kindness and togetherness? Care to direct the thread a little so we have something to go off on?

What's this from by the way, is it an indie film?

This is an old Charlie Chaplin film. Charlie Chaplin is considered one of the greatest actors of all time.

the music is taken from the soundtrack of Inception. For a while it was a thing going around to find the video of that speech, wait till about 45 seconds in and play the music, it's uncanny how well the 2 go together.

In any case in reference to what the other guy said the movie was a satire on nazi germany, not a very subtle one at that. It was actually quite a big deal at the time, if I remember correctly this was before America had entered into World War 2 when we still had kind of a "ehhh this is Europe's problem" attitude toward the whole thing.

What he's getting at is that these aren't default human characteristics and the type of hatefulness of the world is a direct byproduct of the society we've created and less of innate human nature

Absolutely brilliant I gotta say, I really love The Great Dictator, it's a brilliant satire, and this is a truly brilliant speech, the strong emotion can truly be seen in Chaplin.

And no, I don't think the world will ever be like Chaplin says in this speech sadly enough. Greed, hatred and the need for war is just too ingrained on humanity's soul to banish it out.

Wasn't this also his most succesful film? Or considered his best?

Editing that into the OP would be lovely.

It could be, but I think we're turning away from that right now. (Keep in mind I don't follow world news) We'll be much closer to that freedom when there's true 'peace in the middle east', but especially when we discover renewable sources of energy.

Uniting mankind is a necessary step for the future, that is true.
But democracy is not the way. It's our demise.
I only need to look outside to see the the damage it slowly but surely inflicts on countries and human society.
It's not the way, believe me.

But in terms of propaganda this video is very nice footage.

Not bad, but I'll take the original rendition any day:
The lack of music makes it easier to concentrate on the speech itself.

As a quick aside, your avatar would agree with you on this. However, I'm sure his vision of an "ideal" society would be far too harsh for any of us.

Do you live in the United States? If so, bear in mind the U.S. is not a true democracy, but a republic.

If there was a true democracy with an altruistic, tolerant and well-informed public it would do wonders, I feel. Sadly I must agree with your assertion that such an ideal system will probably never truly materialize.

Still, that doesn't mean we shouldn't strive towards it.

I don't live in the USA, I hail from Europe, Germany to be exact :)

To be completely honest, I'm rather leaning towards viewpoint of this Black Templar here.
Of course it's exaggerated and in some regards a little bit too harsh, but generally it's a step into the right direction.
I think mankind is unfit for democracy. A way too loose governance that only invites certain downfall and catastrophe.
Unsuited to defend the people properly from dangers of the outside, the inside and their own minds.
What humanity really needs, in my opinion, is a strong hand that guides it, reclaims right values and keeps it on the right way.

Of course you could call it "oppression". But in my opinion, opression is not given here, since such a system is just built to act in favour of humanity, and unnecessary harshness, which is the main indicator of oppression, isn't meant to exist here.
Though I have to admit, it would require a certain sacrifice of personal freedom.
But heed this: This is not for any tyrant growing fat on his thrown. That is for us. The humans.
A required restraint we have to put on our selves, an aspect of selfless obedience towards mankind's elite in the name of the greater good, we have to make if we truly want to advance and give mankind the chance for a bright and glorious future.

Altruism is great, but tolerance is a double-edged sword, and information can be one as well.
Here it's always reasonable and necessary to have a sensible balance.
A complete atmosphere of tolerance is just as dangerous as an atmosphere of complete assimilation and uncompromised rejection, since it's too forgiving and leaves the door open for degeneration and negative changes.
Whereas information can become dangerous when it's severely altered by perception and becomes capable of misleading human minds.

I like this edit of the speech better. The first one sounds a bit too heroic, but this one just strikes a chord with me.

Dammit, why is it that every time I see this it has that song in it?

Does nobody appreciate the beauty of the original work? The powerful dead silence behind his words?
