Deathnote is the best for me.

Bleach and Naruto are also cool, hoping the new Bleach arc will turn out good.
EDIT: Ow damn, I forgot Dragonball Z!

Wow...reading the answers makes me feel old. Anyone noticed, that most of the animes you named are not really old ?

I'm 30 and i watch anime for 14 Years now, and i would say the best anime was (and will ever be) The Hakkenden.

Why ? Because it's not just some random action movie and/or comedy. To fully understand this masterpice, you have to watch, concentrate and focus.

For me, this series is the real proof, that animated movies CAN be art, and not just something to waste time with.

This my people is only my oppinion, not a new law, so please don't become aggresiv, and now, in my country it is 7pm, i'm off to my parents for celebrating Weihnachten.

Also, allen ein frohes Fest, bis die Tage !

I see a lot of great ones mentioned but one of my favorates that hasn't been is Mushi-Shi though I'd never even heard of it till a few months ago. I'd recomend it to anyone but as the show lacks a Big Bad thouse that need epicness and grand story archs might be disapointed. To me it just made things feel more real and non of the eposides feel like filler.

Another close second would have to be You're Under Arest.

I will keep my eye on this thread. I started watching Rurouni Kenshin, but as I was watching it I couldn't help but think that Samurai Champloo was better, so I stopped. On topic, I'd again say Samurai Champloo is my favourite. It combined Hip Hop with the Edo period, that's just pure dopeness for me. I don't like all the gay emo shit with slow motion and teary eyes though, so I imagine I'm immediately saying "fuck you" to a lot of animes.

Claymore?

That's an.. Interesting choice. Care to elaborate on why?
Because, to my mind, it holds the perfect balance of action and intrigue, with believable and interesting characters, in a world grounded in a certain sort of realism. Anyone can die.

It's what got me into anime, I did my own form of a heel face turn in terms of my attitude towards the medium as a result.

Teresa is my definition of badass, and her scenes contain one of the only moments in all of fictional media that has genuinely made me cry. Two of them, to be exact.

It is a shame about the ending, but I read the manga anyway, so I'm not too concerned about that, and some people even prefer it anyway.

All in all, Claymore is a gritty, dark, and utterly enthralling take on an otherwise cliché fantasy environment, and it captured my imagination completely.

Well, I would say Death Note because it
was a well written and well executed anime
in my personal opinion.

Runners up would be Highschool of the Dead,
Zombie Loan and Elfen Lied.

TENGEN TOPPA GURREN LAGANN

Are there any questions?
Yes, why is it so shit?

I'm kidding, i'm kidding. It's only shit to me. I hate it.

My favourite's Death Note, don't know which is the best.
Yeah I just couldn't get into Death Note, it was to boring for me.

I guess that's why I like Gurren Lagann. In that show, stuff is guaranteed to blow up.

No love for code geass? Come-on, the ending to R2 was amazing :D. Although in a more gritty way the first half of death note, you know, before the little kids come in.

Ohhhh hard to say.
Iv got several Anime that are Teh Greatist Evah.

Rurouni Kenshin for getting me into Anime and Manga as the main one.
The manga is simply awesome.

Tekkaman Blade is also a amazing anime for blending Drama, Tragedy, Action, and even Grimdark in a way that worked and ADDED to the overall experence.
It was way ahead of its time and handled Drama and Grimdark together better than a lot of newer anime COUGHDeath NoteCOUGHEElfen LiedCOUGHGundam 00COUGHCode GeassCOUGH imo.

I would say best series would have to be "Code Geass", Best movie would go to either "Perfect Blue" or "Nausicaa of the valley of the wind"

my personally favourite anime of all time would have to be "The End of Evangelion."

I've always really enjoyed Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star. Even while I'm watching other series I find myself comparing it to those two and going back to re-watch them.

School Days! :D[HEADING=2]

Baccano![/HEADING]
The opening is awesome

Its set on a train in 1930's America, it can be a bit confusing if you dont pay attention but its brilliant regardless. Also its an Anime where the English dub kicks the ever loving shit out of English sub/Japanese dub.

The first series and the ending to series 2 will have my undying love, didnt really like series 2 for the most part, they threw the Mech tactics i loved out the window for the most part but it was overall great.

Clannad. Because no other anime has made be cry like a little kid whose faithful dog just died before his eyes. Seriously. That show broke me. So good.
